Welcome to i-D’s first-ever Beauty Zine, with cover star @tyla . By the time Tyla swept onto our TikTok feeds in the early 2020s, she was already a fully-fledged artist. Raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, the musician had the chops other aspiring pop girls spend years perfecting: a distinct, vibrational sound; absolutely killer dance moves; an experimental and flirty sense of style; and a chameleonic beauty look. In South Africa, the politics of being mixed race are fraught—but Tyla was quick to pick up on beauty rituals from her mum, her aunties, and her friends. She snuck eyeliner into the school bathroom, learned to cornrow her sisters’ hair, and experimented with her look relentlessly, no matter what anyone else said. “I think a lot of the confidence comes from actually knowing who you are, what you like, what you don’t like, and then going into the world with that,” she tells us. The ritual of the Cruise show, essentially a luxury group tour for editors, celebrities, and clients, is the most extreme expression of fashion's ability to fabricate a planned reality for others to reside in. ⁠ ⁠ This week, editors and influential individuals made the trip to sunny Los Angeles for Jonathan Anderson's first Cruise show at @dior . Between landmark cultural institutions from the Griffith Observatory to LACMA, Anderson's Cruise paid homage to Hollywood history, and Christian Dior's own impact on it. In 2022 @kareem and @adamfaze started a short-form video series called @keepthemeterrunnin . The premise was simple: Get into an iconic yellow cab and keep the meter running, letting the cabbies take you wherever they want to go. The result was a joyride through New York City history, a treat that always felt too big for its minute long confines. Now the show is back, this time on YouTube in full episodic glory. In its first season, the world met John McDonagh. In addition to being a cab driver for over 40 years, John’s a dedicated activist: He appeared in an ad for Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, hosts a radio show about leftist Irish politics, and organized cabbies against the Iraq war. He’s also just a really great hang. We had him send us his camera roll from the show’s season 2 premiere, where, for the first time, he says he got to be “one of the beautiful people coming out looking for a cab” at the end of the night. There’s nobody else doing it like @bootsriley . The idiosyncratic auteur responsible for “Sorry to Bother You” and “I’m A Virgo” is back in theaters with another larger-than-life absurdist comedy gnashing with neon colors, surrealist oddities, and societal critique.
