This was one of those weeks that was both intensely rewarding and completely exhausting 😅 Monday I led our @uno.percussion samba bateria in a performance for the UNO CFAM Spotlight event, as well as performed a selection from Juri Seo’s “Birds, Bees, Electric Fish” with @piccolista71 @paulfmatthews_ and @noahedwards_flute . On Tuesday/Wednesday, I traveled to Salina, KS to perform with the Kansas Wesleyan University percussion ensemble on a new composition by @shane.roderick led by @dan.albertsonpercussion . Then Thursday I rushed back to Omaha to host @jack.rago for a timpani masterclass before running a recording session of @brantblackard “Marimba Quartet” with @danidrums_ @c_l_e_m_e_n_s____ @loftus__jack and @colton.tuel . Friday was a marathon of makeup lessons, then Saturday & Sunday I spent with @omahasymphony performing on “Journey to the Rainforest” in collaboration with a local ballet school. I love getting to work with such a wide range of artists and ensembles, and it’s such a beautiful thing to see students blossoming in new opportunities. In a time when every other headline is a new dystopian nightmare, it’s hard to feel anything hopeful or positive. Collaborating in the arts and connecting with other humans in a genuine, heartfelt way is such an incredible privilege, and I try to remind myself of that every day. Grateful for all the wonderful friends and musicians and artists I get to work with every day ❤️ Big thanks to @malletechofficial @zildjiancompany and @remopercussion for their support and for providing the instruments that allow me to sound so good 🎶

Just a reminder that often the most satisfying and rewarding performances aren’t perfect. I hit some clunkers in this performance and had a memory slip or two, but there were some really gorgeous moments, and I am SO proud of Gideon, Kaya and Jamison for their work on the piece. You can catch me breaking into a grin a few times when Gideon plays a beautiful, lush marimba roll or lines his glock notes up perfectly, and I had to turn around and smile at Kaya and Jamison at the end for their masterful bow choreography. It was such a lovely few minutes of performing with them in our own little world, taking me out the chaos consuming our planet and just giving pure joy. Art isn’t perfect. It’s messy. It’s meant to make you feel things. Sometimes it’s an escape. Sometimes it’s a cathartic release. Sometimes it’s a way to attempt to express the inexpressible. Sometimes it’s a protest. Sometimes it’s an assault on the senses. Sometimes it’s a soothing balm. But ALWAYS. ALWAYS. Art is NECESSARY. Yes, this was just a silly little marimba piece. But if it gives even one person a moment of peace in this madness, that’s enough for me. @mwwildcatband @uno.percussion

NOT an April Fools’ Day Joke—I’ve been granted tenure and a promotion to Associate Professor at UNO! The past six years have been an incredible journey of growth and learning as I’ve found my stride as a teacher and mentor. I’m so grateful to the students and colleagues at UNO who have helped me become the musician and teacher I am today. However exhausting or frustrating some aspects of the job may be, I’m thankful every day that I get to do what I love and get to make music with others who are passionate and hungry to learn. Here’s to this next chapter at UNO!

Had such a blast playing the mallet book for “The Empire Strikes Back” with @indysymphony 🎶 It’s always such a special thrill getting to play with my old hometown symphony. Participating in the ISO’s Side-by-Side youth orchestra program was a pivotal experience for me and my first exposure to orchestral music, and I’ll forever be grateful for that opportunity. Lots of nostalgia seeing this phenomenal crew perform last night 💖 @3d_percussion absolutely KILLED their program of new percussion trio commissions. It was especially lovely having them out in Nebraska—just a little Eastman percussion reunion out in the Midwest! And such a thrill to hear the new trio “Tempus Uri” by our incredible teacher @michael.burritt 🔥⏰ My students were so thrilled to get to work with @andrewbockman_perc @emmagierszalperc and @sammydeangelis in a master class. We are so excited to have the incredible Dr. Hannah Weaver visit as a guest artist this week! She will be giving a recital THIS FRIDAY at 7:00pm in Breedlove Rm 105, joined by @andrewlamehardin and @brantblackard It is free and open to the public. She’ll also be teaching and coaching some of our percussion students; We can’t wait to have her on campus! From her bio: An avid solo and chamber performer, Hannah Weaver has special interests in contemporary literature and the solo literature of J. S. Bach. Recent performances include a world premiere of Jennifer Bellor’s “Amethyst Sky” (considered for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Grammy 2020) and a solo recital of transcriptions of Bach solo works for collaborations of marimba, vibes, and dancers. A member of the Heartland Marimba Quartet since 2021, she will be performing with the quartet on their spring 2021 tour (concerti performances with Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, concerts in Mason City, IA and Oak Park, IL). Her mixed chamber trio “Odds and Ends” (saxophone, clarinet and percussion) will release an electronic album summer ‘21 with new commissions by Kitty Xiao, Erich Barganier, Jeremy Bearsden and Sean William Calhoun. With the Eastman Percussion Ensemble in their showcase performance at PASIC Nov. 2017, she performed in the world premieres of the John Psathas octet and Michael Burritt septet. Summers of 2016-2018, Weaver was percussion fellow with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and summer 2019 she attended the Lake George Music Festival as one of two percussion fellows. She has also held fellowships with the Texas Music Festival and the National Repertory Orchestra. A passionate teacher committed to cultivating her students’ individual musicianship, Weaver holds the position of Assistant Professor of Percussion at University of Nebraska-Omaha. Previously she taught at Virginia Tech during the 2018 spring semester.
