From the keffiyeh tops in Sex and the City and the smut-screened tanks of Fight Club, to Beyoncé’s hand-painted leather jacket and Bella Hadid’s unforgettable moment at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, @hushi5 ’s imprint on pop culture is vast and unruly. Far ahead of his time, his work confronted Islamophobia, satirised the empire from within, and offered a new cultural lexicon for a generation seeking recognition. For our Anniversary Issue, Dazed MENA’s deputy editor @sarraalayyan spoke with the designer about the brands legacy, the cultures that raised him and what the present holds. Life now is exams, papers, more tests, Geology , Biology , Chemistry , undergrad science requirements etc . Thank you to my White Point demonstration garden team of native gardeners & naturalists to help plant the seed of stewardship , serenity , and ecology. Not sure what will happen but Happy Earth day 🌎🩵🌱

Nowruz Pirooz & welcome the vernal equinox! Dear 1405, please , bless & protect all our beloveds back home on that sacred soil with peace, happiness and self-determination. 🌱🕊️🫀 A history of Revolution & uprising against oppression & violence by the regime . Support the agency of Iranians to define their own future & their right to self-determination. Long live Iran & our beautiful people of Iran. . . Repost @shamimazimiiii “This video is not a list of isolated events. It documents a consistent pattern of repression, violence, and impunity. You’ve seen the last 20 years—and it is still happening today. Internet shutdowns, isolation, prisons, torture, sexual abuse, executions, and mass killings of protesters. Silence is not neutrality. Any government or institution that prioritizes interests over accountability is complicit in these crimes. The world must wake up. Stand with the people of Iran. کنار مردم ایران بایستید @unitednations @unhumanrights @amnesty @amnestyinternational @hrw @humanrightswatch @icc_cpi @icrc @eu_commission @europeanparliament @usstateDept @StateDeptSpox @UKForeignOffice @Number10gov @EUCouncil @UN_Women @UNICEF @UNESCO @Reuters @AP @BBCWorld @CNN @AlJazeera @DWNews @guardian @nytimes @washingtonpost @france24 #IranProtests #StandWithIran #FreeIran #WomanLifeFreedom #digitalblackoutiran “

@hushi5 and I met in mid-1994, when he was working at the Patricia Field store on 8th Street. We all used to go to Webster Hall on Thursdays—it was the height of the Club Kid era in NYC. At the time, I was a hopeful young makeup artist, knocking on doors and assisting established professionals. I was deeply influenced by punk, New Romantic, and Persian art and history, and I began fusing those inspirations in my work—mixing Siouxsie Sioux–style eye makeup with 18th-century Persian unibrows and the chalk-white New Romantic aesthetic. Hushi and I often spent time together in my East Village studio, where I would cook us delicious Persian meals. We watched Persian films, 80s music videos, and flipped through Persian movie magazines. It was in that space that the inspiration for their first incredible show truly came to life. We were also deeply passionate about world politics and what was happening in West Asia, which led to the idea of using Persian slogans and typography. It was a reaction to the political climate at the time and marked the beginning of a truly magical creative partnership. I feel so blessed to have been part of it—especially because, back then, there were no expectations. Everything was done with pure integrity. Later, I worked at Hushi’s East Village boutique, and with his permission, I would wear some of his dazzling creations out to nightclubs—something that continued even after my gender confirmation surgery in 2004. I will never forget how Hushi would hand-paint fabrics all night long, then set them out to dry so they could be sewn into beautiful garments the very next day before their shows.

“For the 1st time since 1988, the U.S. will not recognize World Aids Day, Trump like Reagan may try to erase us, but we will never forget “ - @mattxiv #RezaAbdoh Iranian born theatre director & playwright in NYC, 1963-1995 “The AIDS crisis was both subject and metaphor for Abdoh’s work. A plague that for a brief moment killed all of its victims indiscriminately — regardless of race, gender, age, income, or nationality — formed the crucible through which Abdoh made common cause against his time. The virus revealed the pastoral brutality of 1980s and 1990s America through the daily lives and agonizing deaths of a generation of gay men, set against the malign neglect of Presidents Reagan and Bush. Just before his death, Abdoh gave instructions that his plays never be performed again. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that his work should recirculate in a context he would likely never have imagined: the art world. Abdoh’s angry, purgative, humanist work speaks all-too-vividly to the present day. Among the tragic ironies of Abdoh’s life and death, there is this: had he lived just one more year, it’s quite likely he would still be alive today. (Abdoh died in May 1995; the death sentence of AIDS began to lift in 1996, with the widespread introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy.) Many have speculated about what might have been — the fame and acclaim he might have found as a filmmaker or poet. But we believe that it’s crucial now, almost twenty-five years after his death, to remember what he did. “ - @bidounprojects
