The inmates carried out a series of hunger strikes to protest the arduous living conditions and raise demands for proper toilets and food.
One such hunger strike that started on 12th May 1933 lasted for 45 days.

On the 6th day, the British officials decided to force-feed these protestors a mixture of milk, sugar and eggs through a tube fitted through their nose while gaurds held them down.
.
A lot of prisoners fought the feeding by coughing heavily to dislodge the tube and often this caused the liquid to sleep into their lungs, resulting in pneumonia and ultimately death.
.
It is only in 1937 that an agreement was reached b/w Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Lord Linithgow which initiated the release of the prisoners. By 1938 all the prisoners had been shipped out.

The Cells measure 4.5m × 2.7m with a small iron vent at the back.

The 7 wings were oriented in such a way that the front of one wing faces the rear of the next. The idea was to keep the prisoners in isolation.

It was meant to break down the very spirit of the men in captivity, and often it did.

Known as काला पानी/Kālā Pānī (black waters) it was set up by the British Raj to imprison the political activists.
Construction completed in 1906.

Designed like a wheel with 7 spokes.
There is a watch tower at the centre from which the gaurds could keep a lookout at all the 7 wings.
