Just when you thought you had bid farewell to the whimsical playfulness of your childhood slinky toy, an enigmatic twist awaits. This is Slinky Nightmare.
Starting with James's creative doodle and Bryce's 2D magic, I breathed life into Slink while experimenting with fur workflows I've been developing. It was also an amazing opportunity to oil up my rusted animation skills and learn/push new methods. Huge thanks to the Buck Syd team for their invaluable feedback and teaching me new techniques and Thanks @buck_design for providing opportunity to work on amazing project like this.
Oh this project also counts as the first project that I made music for!!

This single render is all I have left of my favorite cat statue from the Bankwest "Runaway" spot, so I’m giving it the spotlight it deserves (even if it's just by zooming in and out!). 🐈
For this project, I was responsible for the modeling, lookdev, and rigging of the cat statue, map, and whip, as well as the modeling of the main character.

Reposting Slinky again because everyone seems to like the progress reels 😅
What started as a small RnD idea for @buck_design ended up becoming a whole project of its own — Slinky’s nightmare.
It was originally based on @jamesboorman ’s doodle and @bpembs ’s 2D animation, and somehow turned into a funky loop / RnD playground where I got to push around every part of the process — rigging, animation, sim, comp, and some scrappy sound design.

This bike tassel rig for the Bankwest Sidecar spot was oddly satisfying to work on.
Of course, I ended up overcomplicating the setup — totally unnecessary. It wasn’t even so visible in the final spot lol.

광고에서 사이드카 바이크가 겨우 0.5초 정도 스쿼시/스트레치 되도록 리깅하는데 너무 많은 시간을 쓴 게 아닌가 싶다면, 네... 너무 많은 시간을 써서 다이렉터한테 살짝 혼났었습니다. 나쁜 사람...
하지만 다이렉터는 한국어 캡션 못 읽죸ㅋㅋㅋ. 😅
I was always excited whenever Bankwest came back to us with a new brief —
it always meant another round of fun characters and funky ideas to explore.
For this sidecar spot, I got to handle this fun squashy sidecar: modeling, lookdev, and rigging.
Did I go a little overboard with it? …Yeah, maybe just a bit 😅

For the Gongcha ad, we ditched heavy liquid sims and went with a clean rig — Linear + Shrink Wrap deformers in Maya.
Faster, more control, easier to shape the timing.
Not every shot needs simulation — sometimes, rigging just makes more sense.

So you’re saying… we need a cloths simulation with four characters crammed in,
the blouse floats lightly but keeps its silhouette,
the gown folds softly — weighted but elegant,
some parts of clothing follow animation…
and then a sudden blast of wind hits everyone?
아직 후디니가 낯선 나에게 옷 시뮬레이션은 쉽지 않다.
그런데 네 명의 캐릭터가 바짝 붙어 있는 클로즈업 씬에서, 블라우스는 가볍게 하늘하늘 움직이지만 실루엣은 유지하고, 가운은 부드럽고 무게감 있게 주름지되 과하지 않게, 게다가 특정 부분은 애니메이션에 맞춰 따로 움직이고… 그 와중에 갑자기 헤어드라이기로 모두 날려 버린다구요? 저보고 하라구요?

Anyone else love doing dumb rigging tests? Because I do. 🦴
My favorite part of Wolfonso’s rig is how it can switch its head left and right while keeping all the facial controls intact (check 00:40 in the video). I also spent some time on the shoulder rig so it always bends in that nice, designed arc.
Did I overcomplicate the rig? Yes.
Was it necessary? maybe not?
But was it super fun? yes.
