In China, the word for “butterfly” shares its pronunciation with “tetsu,” meaning eighty years of age, and has therefore come to symbolize “wealth, prosperity, and longevity.” In Japan as well, the subject has long been admired for its elegance and brilliance. This work captures the fleeting moment when a butterfly descends toward peonies swaying in the wind. During the Edo period, intensive cultivation and hybridization led to an unprecedented “chrysanthemum boom” in the early 18th century, when people became captivated by the flower’s beauty and variety. Hokusai, too, captured this cultural fascination in his works, carefully rendering not only the intricate textures and layered forms of the chrysanthemums, but also the subtle sensation of wind and atmosphere surrounding them. In this work, layers upon layers of vivid chrysanthemum petals nearly overwhelm the picture plane, while a single horsefly drifting lightly among the dense blossoms introduces a quiet rhythm and sense of movement. Currently, Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro is presenting the solo exhibition “Early Summer Prints.” This exhibition features five new print works based on paintings originally presented in Takashi Murakami’s @takashipom solo exhibition “Hark Back to Ukiyo-e: Tracing Superflat to Japonisme’s Genesis.,” held at Perrotin in Los Angeles in March 2026. Among the highlights are “Homage to Monet: Woman with a Parasol” and “Homage to Monet” both of which pay tribute to Claude Monet while also inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s film “The Wind Rises”. “Homage to Monet: Woman with a Parasol” recalls the composition of “Woman with a Parasol – Madame Monet and Her Son,” while the easel and the sky streaked with an airplane is reminiscent of “The Wind Rises”. The Impressionist landscape is transformed through Murakami’s “Flower” motif, reconstructing Monet’s imagery within the context of contemporary Japanese visual culture—much as Monet once reinterpreted ukiyo-e through the lens of Western painting. Its counterpart, “Homage to Monet,” Murakami’s character appears in place of the child originally depicted by Monet. The two works are designed to echo one another, creating a relationship in which the “Flower” appears to gaze toward the girl. These motifs first appeared as rare cards in Takashi Murakami trading cards. We invite you to enjoy these works which evoke the gentle atmosphere of early summer. ． ． 現在、Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro では、初夏をテーマにした個展「初夏の版画展」を開催中です。 本展では、2026年3月にロサンゼルスのペロタンにて開催された村上隆 @takashipom 個展「Hark Back to Ukiyo-e: Tracing Superflat to Japonisme’s Genesis.」で発表されたペインティング作品をもとに、新たに展開された版画作品を5点ご紹介しております。 なかでも《モネ 日傘の女へのオマージュ》と《モネへのオマージュ》は、クロード・モネ作品へのオマージュを軸としながら、宮崎駿監督作品『風立ちぬ』の世界観に影響を受けた作品だといいます。 《モネ 日傘の女へのオマージュ》は、《日傘をさす女（散歩）》を想起させる構図となっており、屋外でイーゼルを立てる少女の姿や、空へと伸びる飛行機雲が『風立ちぬ』を思わせます。印象派的な風景表現は、村上隆を象徴する「お花」モチーフへと置き換えられ、モネが浮世絵を西洋絵画として再解釈したように、本作もまた現代日本の視覚表現の文脈の中でモネ作品を再構築しています。 対となる《モネへのオマージュ》では、モネが描いたカミーユの息子の代わりに、村上隆のキャラクターが描かれています。 両作品は空間構成が呼応するように設計されており、「お花」のキャラクターが少女を見上げるような関係性となっています。 なお、これらのモチーフの初出は村上隆トレーディングカードのレアカードでした。 初夏の爽やかな風景を思わせる涼やかな作品群を、ぜひ会場にてご高覧ください。

Hidari Zingaro is currently hosting Takashi Murakami’s @takashipom “Early Summer Print Exhibition” through May 24. This exhibition features five new works. Among them, “UFO, Flower Parent and Child, and Many Cats in Torii Kiyonaga’s ‘A Party Viewing the Moon across the Sumida River’ – SUPERFLAT,” featured in the video, is based on a work by Torii Kiyonaga, one of the ukiyo-e masters of the Edo period. Kiyonaga was renowned for his bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), and the original composition depicts a moon-viewing banquet held on the second floor of a riverside restaurant along the west bank of the Sumida River. The elegantly dressed women, with their refined kimono and hair ornaments, are striking. In Murakami’s reinterpretation, the scene is enriched with playful elements: numerous cats frolicking indoors, a flower parent and child by the river, and even a UFO floating in the sky. This visually dense work evokes the sounds of insects on a summer night and the lively atmosphere of the gathering. We invite you to experience this richly detailed piece in person at the gallery. . Referencing Eizan’s bijinga, Murakami reconstructs these compositions through the lens of his Superflat theory. Delicate ornamentation, vivid colors, and contemporary motifs intertwine, creating richly layered images in which past and present converge. The exhibition runs through today only. The solo exhibition “Gugi Akiyama Ceramic Art Exhibition” by Gugi Akiyama @gugitter has opened at Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro . This exhibition showcases ceramic works created under the guidance of master ceramicist Iida Seppou of Hokuto in Kanazawa. From the opening day, the venue has been filled with a warm and friendly atmosphere, as Akiyama’s friends and fans paid a visit. Visitors picked out pieces that suited their taste while engaging in conversations, and delighted in finding their favorite. Each work is carefully packaged in a custom box featuring an original logo, wrapped in a furoshiki cloth, and presented in a specially designed original shopper. This attention to detail reflects Akiyama’s professional background in package and logo design, adding another layer of appeal to the exhibition. The exhibition runs until April 3rd. Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro will hold “Akiyama Gugi Ceramic Art Exhibition” @gugitter starting on Friday, March 28th. “My main job is design, but for the past three years I have been making pottery under the guidance of Professor Iida Setsuho of Hokuto, located in the gardens that are said to have served as the model for Kenrokuen Garden, which is on the former site of the secondary residence of Honda Awa-no-kami, a feudal lord of the Kaga domain with a million koku of rice in Kanazawa. I was approached by Takashi Murakami and am now holding a solo ceramics exhibition at Hidari Zingaro. Starting December 21, 2024, Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro will host a solo exhibition by Goro Ishimori @goro_i titled "Continuation of Dreams, Portraits of Family." After completing graduate studies at Tokyo Zokei University, Ishimori joined Kaikai Kiki in 2015, where he worked as a staff member while continuing his artistic practice for about nine years. In June 2024, he left Kaikai Kiki to focus entirely on his career as an artist. This exhibition marks his first solo show at Hidari Zingaro. The exhibition will feature 12 new paintings centered around the theme of "family." These works are inspired by old portraits of his parents and snapshots featuring the artist himself.
