I live near Ulu Pandan park connector, I think it’s damn beautiful because I ride past it every day; otters, monitor lizards, fish eagles and all. Good job
@nparksbuzz
My mom lives near it too, but we never take her there, because she’s on a wheelchair.
A one way journey from Jurong to Buona Vista will take 30 mins on a bicycle will become a 2 hr journey on foot. Slower if you push a wheelchair. If you start at 8 am, that means getting there at 10 am.
Too damn hot.
I bought a $500 wheelchair-bicycle thing for Mom, in the hopes that so we can get around easier.
Dad and I took it out this morning for a test run, and I never saw him so happy. It’s also become a chance for us to bond, because he loves tinkering with stuff.
He already has a lot of ideas to improve the wheelchair-bicycle thing.
We attracted a lot of weird stares today, but guess what.
They might not realise it now, but in the next 10-20 years, many Singaporeans will also have loved ones who are wheelchair users.
There’s so much potential for us to transform our lives for the better using bikes/human powered vehicles, but often cyclists and active mobility users get side-lined in the favour of motorists. Maybe it’s a car revenue thing. Or maybe it’s politically costly.
Whatever.
I just want to see a future where I can get my parents around without spending $100,000 on a car. Or hundreds of dollars a month on Grab. Or a car-share service, for trips less than 5 km.
I don’t want to live in a city where only the upper middle class and above can enjoy the freedom of mobility. To me in the long term, that is unacceptable.
Many people say that a car-free life is impossible in Singapore. That it’s dangerous, and inconvenient.
Maybe so. But if there’s not enough people adopting this lifestyle, it’s gonna be hard for the govt to spend money on infrastructure. We need to gain momentum as a group.
So this is my attempt to show you that a car-free life can feasible, even with elderly parents.
And hopefully when I’m done, you’ll try it too. And then you will join my cause.
It took me awhile, but I finally get it.
Indeed, we need to be the change we want to see.
