Have you heard of the Animal Classroom? Located at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden in Singapore Botanic Gardens, this is where preschoolers can meet rescued pets under the care of our Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS). 👧🏻🐰
As an AVS volunteer, Mavis Soh dedicated her time over the past two years to outreach efforts and learning journeys. During her time caring for the rescued animals, Mavis helped children understand the importance of empathy, compassion, and responsible pet ownership.
Mavis believed that inspiring future generations to treat animals with kindness and respect begins with helping children understand their feelings.
“I joined AVS as a volunteer because it’s a powerful platform to reach young children, teaching them respect and compassion for animals. Together, we can create a kinder world for all to live in.”

This plant has spike inflorescences that are about 8 – 15 cm long, and its flowers has white petals that turn brown with age.
It thrives in bright and waterlogged areas such as mangroves, forming an important part of the undergrowth. 🌳
It can also be found along river banks near the coast, where they are regularly inundated by seawater!

🐱 Community cats are a common sight in Singapore, but did you know there’s a dedicated team in the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) working behind the scenes to support their care?
Meet Dr Lin Anhui, a veterinarian at NParks’ AVS, who leads the team behind Singapore’s Cat Management Framework. This includes the Trap-Neuter-Rehome/Release-Manage (TNRM) programme, a science-based approach that supports an estimated 13,000 free-roaming cats with sterilisation and helps them find loving homes. 💕

That’s right – it looks like a cat’s whiskers! This white flower is named after its appearance and is known as Cat’s Whiskers (𝘖𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴)!
Its “whiskers” are 5cm-long hairy stamens, and its flowers are arranged in a conical-shaped inflorescence. 😍

Have you ever spotted this slender, bright fluorescent green snake with horizontally elongated pupils? 👀🐍 It is usually well-camouflaged among bushes and shrubs.
This is our native Oriental Whip Snake (𝘈𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘢) that can grow up to 2 metres! #FunFact: It gives birth to live young, unlike most snakes!
Although it is mildly venomous and generally not aggressive, remember to keep your distance!
