Five years ago, in the year the world as we knew it changed, my niece - Mohau - started grade 1.
As part of the Heritage month celebrations in September, she went to school dressed in traditional isiZulu clothing.
What she saw or experienced in those celebrations at her school, none of us are really clear on.
But she came back home and asked her parents to put on ‘Zulu music’
… then preceded to dance!
Not just any dance mind you.
Her moves were akin to what we would call ukugida … with a more traditional nuance.
Like she was moving to a rhythm coming from within.
Her mom, who has graciously welcomed me into her daughters’ lives over the years, video-called me with excitement …
Mohau was energised,
Her mom was proud,
I was over the moon!
By just how moved this vibrant 7-year-old was by a connection to her roots.
For some time after that, we would ask her to show us her moves again.
Her request for the conditions were consistent:
1 She needs her Zulu beads
2 We need to put Zulu music
And then she was off!
Oh, did this gorgeous girl dance. And we danced along!
That image and experience stayed with the storyteller in me. I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful to write a children’s book about a girl who dances to her rhythm coming from within.
It remained a concept that intrigued me, but with no real story developing. Until a year ago, when it finally crystallised.
Stories need the storyteller to be ready to birth them.
That time is now.
