When Dr @nokuthulamazibukomsimang came by the other day to attend the launch of Fabrics of Love by @tales_by_lebomazibuko we asked her to take a pic with one of her latest works - Dolly Rathebe: Queen of African Jazz Blues & Mbaqanga published by @xarrabooks This is a celebration of the life and times of jazz legend and Africa’s first film star, Dolly Rathebe “Mam’ Dolly” ,as she’s affectionately called. the seminal biography narrates Mam’ Dolly’s beginnings as a budding singer and film star, during the buzzing 1950’s cultural kaleidoscope that was Sophiatown. Mam’ Dolly is remembered for paving the way for the likes of Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Abigail Kubeka, Marah Louw and many other jazz greats. The worlds of the inimitable Dolly Rathebe - the mega diva of Sophiatown, the gorgeous Drum magazine pin-up cover lady ,the church elder, the mother ,the lover- are explored in this rich and enchanting biography. Our stories, our legacy, our heritage ❤️📚

We celebrate this #FreedomDay with Inheritance, the English translation of ILIFA by Dr @athambile_m - These daring, contemporary and inventive poems are now in English, translated by the poet, and presented here alongside the original text. Inheritance is a window into the lives of Black women in South Africa right now – a deft dance between self-care and recrimination, between free love and social safety, and between the shadows of the past and the dim light of a just-as-complicated present @uhlangapress We look forward to launching this poetry collection in June! Watch this pace ❤️📚 #freedomday2026🇿🇦
