Our 121st book club pick and first pick of 2026 is “Kin” by @tayari Jones—and @oprah already sat down with her to speak all about the novel! The story follows Vernice and Annie, two young girls from Honeysuckle, Louisiana who spend their adolescence grappling with the reality of being motherless and how it has shaped them into who they are. This book about sisterhood and what it means to grow up as a woman in the South is one you won’t want to miss out on. Watch the latest episode of “Oprah’s Book Club” featuring Tayari and fellow book club members on @oprah ’s YouTube channel (link in bio) or wherever you podcast.

I like my white like I like my reading time- UNINTERRUPTED. So many folks reading KIN had never heard of Black women wearing “uninterrupted white.” To quote great bard, Montell Jordan— This is how we do it.

Often, we the diminish the labor of motherhood. The labor of holding grief and tenderness at the same time. The labor of making things feel stable when they weren’t. The labor of stretching money, energy, time, patience, and selfhood. The labor of raising children while still trying to survive your own life. In our conversation, @tayari spoke so beautifully about how we can diminish what it actually took for someone to mother us because, as children, we often only remember how loved we felt—not the weight someone carried to make that feeling possible. And maybe part of becoming an adult is realizing: the women who raised us were often hanging on by a thread while still trying to make childhood feel soft. Maybe that’s why, as we get older, our mothers become more human to us. More extraordinary 💐 Send this to a woman who helped raise you 💕 #kin #community #village #motherhood #kohere
