From Ultra4 desert setup to full-on Pikes Peak trim. 😳 Our normal setup is a 40” Yokohama Geolandar M/T built to survive rocks, desert, and whatever Ultra4 throws at it. Sitting next to it is our Pikes Peak Hill Climb package — a 26” Yokohama road course tire designed for pure grip and pavement performance. Roughly 14” shorter, around 80 lbs lighter per corner, and the grip difference on asphalt is unreal. Two completely different worlds… same car. The car is packed up and ready to get some new wiring done by the @zelayabrothers . Due to us moving the fuel cell, battery, air shifting pump, and electronics to the passenger side of the car we are needing some new wiring. This also gives the potential for some quality of life upgrades. Also who thinks a test day with no doors and body work would like awesome? Since we are remaking the exhaust we decided to increase our size of our wastegates to 60mm. We are using @turbosmarthq 60mm Powergates. These are completely electronic allowing use to configure them how ever we want. They do not use a spring or a mac valves to release exhaust pressure but they are completely controlled through the ECU or Turbo Smart Blackbox. Another nice feature of the Powergates is that the head swivels so you can fit them in tight spaces. We use a @motec_global M150 ECU with a development license which allows us to control any system we want in the car. We cannot wait to test them out. Adding intercoolers also presented the opportunity for us to remake our charge tubing and exhaust. All the aluminum tubing and 321 stainless tubing is from @vibrant_performance . We are also using twin air to air 3.5” x 14” 11 3/4” (H) high performance intercoolers also from Vibrant Performance. Cannot wait to show how well these parts integrate. As we said in an earlier post, we are adding intercoolers to Hammerhead. We were not particularly worried about IAT temps but wanted to add a bit of safety margin. Adding intercoolers also presented the opportunity for us to remake our charge tubing and exhaust. All the aluminum tubing and 321 stainless tubing is from @vibrant_performance . We have been working on a major redevelopment on Hammerhead. This is no small feat as we are adding intercoolers, moving the fuel cell, increasing the fuel capacity, changing the intercooling tubing, and several other miscellaneous items. Now that our old charge tubing and exhaust is removed we can place the @garrettmotion G35-1050 turbos in there best location. The @vibrant_performance HD clamp alignment tool has been crucial to this rebuild process to make sure everything fits with the correct clearances. We are using @radiumengineering 22 gal cell with the FCST-X full cell surge tank. This is being done because we get 1.5 mpg on track and to move the weight in a better place. Since the car is almost sorted I was able to really focus diagnosing the trans temp. It’s been cold. Well after about an hour I was max 140 degrees. I had a too cold problem before but it is a new transmission thermostat bypass valve, I gave it the benefit of the doubt initially. Well, it’s a faulty new unit. I’m flowing to the cooler about 100%. Even idling at 140 degrees it dropped down to 130 in 5 min with my Mishimoto fan going. Improved Racing 185 bypass valve on the way. Going to reuse the hard lines and do 1/2” tube to -10AN conversion. Will finally get the temp under control, fast warmup and keep it right where it belongs, 180-200 for maximum transmission performance. Then I can finally lean on it to get 93 octane (my base fuel) dialed in for the first time. When I started this journey this deep into a build like this I was not well prepared for any issues that might arise. Today I know exactly what I’m doing and why.
