Hello! Emerging from instagram post hiatus to share some photos of a sculpture I made and installed in Highland Park (pittsburgh) last week.~ "Connected Vessels"
Built with pipes of different diameters, some salvaged leftovers of industrial processes including a section of scrap from the "Rover" fracked natural gas pipeline.
These pipes carry water and air, hold soil. There is a forged open water lily on top at the intersection of the arches, drawing rainwater down into the collection vessel below which then spills over into four channels delivering the water into planters.
The planters are set facing each of the cardinal directions. They hold gravel, sand, soil, compost, worm castings, peat moss, and trumpet honeysuckle plants ready to reach and climb.
If 4 people blow through the pipes running up the arches they can play a C major chord plus a low G.
Thinking of all the things we call a "vessel," how they hold, convey, collect, deliver, embody, transport, and even protect.
Thinking of Louise Bourgeois's mother protector spiders. Thinking of water striders. Thinking of Sun Ra and joyful noises. Everyone who works to envision and exemplify compassionate and powerfully gentle ways to be in this world.🔥 Thanks to all the pals who helped on the install: Kirsten, Caleb, Cindy, #jimlingo,
