Neil Porter recently participated as a keynote speaker in @arq.futuro ’s third edition of the Novas Centralidades (New Urban Centralities) debate, held in the cities of Campinas and São Paulo, Brazil. The event focused on urban parks and discussed the role of these spaces in the future of cities. @neilporter58 shared his insights on parks and public spaces as places where democracy thrives and climate crisis solutions come to light. He brought an international perspective of landscape architecture to the discussion of the current realities of urban parks in Brazil. Some of the key projects he used to address the event’s themes were Westergasfabriek Park, Amsterdam, a depolluted former industrial complex where cultural events can take place in a park setting; Parque Central, Valencia, which reconnects neighbourhoods with gardens and cultural areas; and Taikoo Place, Hong Kong, where a high-quality urban garden becomes the focus for biodiversity. After his presentation, he participated in the “Landscape, Architecture and Infrastructure” debate panel, with @carolinabaracat.pmc , Secretary of Urbanism at Campinas; @samuellloyd.oficial , Commercial Director of @urbiaparques ; Juan Ignacio Díaz, Executive Director of the @miparque ; and moderated by @policeneto from @insperedu and Maria Rita Amoroso from @fauusp / Lab Campinas. 28 years after establishing the practice with Neil Porter, Kathryn Gustafson is stepping back from her day-to-day role as Founding Partner of Gustafson Porter + Bowman. She will continue in a consultancy role as a Founder of the practice. Kathryn’s transition reflects a change rather than a departure from landscape architecture. With her career spanning more than 45 years, she will continue designing – an integral part of her identity and one that will remain unchanged. Kathryn is internationally renowned for creating distinctive sculptural landscapes which engage at a fundamental human level. She has been responsible for the design of many of our iconic projects including the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London, Parque Central in Valencia, Site Tour Eiffel in Paris and Taikoo Place in Hong Kong. She founded Gustafson Porter + Bowman with @neilporter58 in 1997, later joined by @marymarthabowman in 2002. The Founding Partners together with Partners @sibylla_hartel , @donncha.oshea and @edo.carranza will continue to shape the design ethos and direction of the practice. “I will continue to design – that’s never been in question.”, says Kathryn. #kathryngustafson #gustafsonporterbowman #landscapearchitecture

On 31st January, Kathryn Gustafson, along with @bhbognar , (@kkaa_official ) and Shunsaku Miyagi (PLACEMEDIA Landscape Architects Collaborative), were keynote speakers at the Living Traditions 2026 #Conference held at the @portlandjapanesegarden ! This year, the afternoon gathering was titled “Visions of Water: Revitalizing Cities, Landscapes, and Community Life” and was centred around water as a bridge between heritage and innovation. Kathryn discussed how #water – through landscape projects – can serve as a metaphoric reinterpretation of the people who shaped the land centuries prior, such as the design behind Parque Central, Valencia. “Water – especially when there are so many different moods, whether it is the violence [of water], or dappled light or rushing [sounds] – makes people more receptive to emotions by opening them up to the wonderment of water. It enhances our humanity.”, says Kathryn. “There is a special kind of magic in bringing together voices so compelling that even a single word like water becomes a world,” shares @nakannen , who served as emcee and moderator. “Our speakers kept us leaning forward the entire time. I remain in awe of the opportunity to engage in conversation alongside these three remarkable thinkers and makers.” Watch the full talk and read more via the ‘News’ page linked in bio Photography credits: Photography by Nina Johnson © Portland Japanese Garden Centre #livingtraditions #kathryngustafson #gustafsonporterbowman

Gustafson Porter + Bowman has been appointed by the @londonschoolofeconomics to prepare the #landscape design concept for the reimagination, pedestrianisation and landscaping of Portugal Street, located at the heart of LSE’s University Quarter. The jury considered our concept to be closest to LSE’s aspirations, presenting a sophisticated and elegant response to the design brief, including a focus on public art, inclusivity and accessibility. “For students, staff and the wider LSE community, the public spaces between our buildings have become central to the unique university experience. As an intensely urban institution at the heart of London, Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s elegant proposals for Portugal Street will bring the city and the university closer together”, says Professor Ricky Burdett CBE, Professor of Urban Studies and Director of LSE Cities. “We are thrilled to have won this competition to develop the concept design for the LSE public realm. Our proposal aims to make Portugal Street the heart of the Campus for students and faculty but also a destination for visitors who want to engage with and learn about the fantastic research and thinking taking place at LSE.”, comments @marymarthabowman , Founding Partner. Marking the arrival of Spring, the Pink Trumpet Tree is in full flower at Taikoo Garden! The Pink Trumpet Tree was specifically chosen for its prolific flowering and its attractiveness to wildlife. In spring, covered in pink flowers, it becomes the focal point of the garden, enjoyed by office workers, local residents and pollinating insects alike. Completed in 2024, Taikoo Garden was designed as an intimate open space with lush biodiverse vegetation and a sculptural cooling water feature. Last week, @neilporter58 gave a lecture at @iuav_venezia for the master’s students as part of their ‘Future Garden’ program. He explored some of our cultural and heritage landscape projects while also confronting the present challenges of climate change. He touched on a few of our renowned examples such as Valencia Parque Central, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain and Towards Paradise. The photograph shows Neil talking about our landscape masterplan for the Mezyad Desert Park in Al Ain, UAE. Thank you to the University for hosting Neil and we hope the students were left with some food for thought! The @iuav_master_future_garden program aims to provide the cultural inspiration and technical tools necessary for students to address landscape design in its various forms. The active involvement of prominent professionals – such as Neil Porter and his knowledge of landscape design – supports the design experiments and workshops. 📸: @iuav_master_future_garden #universitylecture #talk #universitàiuavdivenezia #neilporter #gustafsonporterbowman

Xīnnián kuàilè / Gong hei fat choy / Happy Lunar New Year to our clients, collaborators, colleagues and friends! We are celebrating the Year of the Horse by highlighting our project in China – Sijing Residences in collaboration with @rshparchitects . The concept inspiration for the landscape design arose out of the site’s location close to Sijing Town. ‘Sijing’ translates as ‘4 rivers’, as the town is located on a junction where 4 streams meet. The river provided good transport connections for business and Sijing Town became a rich town near Shanghai. The four rivers, symbolizing wealth and well-being, became the guiding principle for the landscape concept. Read more about Sijing Residences via the ‘Projects’ page linked in IG bio. The Storm King Art Centre project was part of a substantial capital renovation, the first in the museum’s 65-year history. The arrival sequence to the Centre uses a strategy of routes to and through clearings, guiding the visitor through the inhabited #woodland to arrive at Storm King. The purpose of the annual @aianewyorkstate Design Awards program is to honour the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence. Congratulations @stormkingartcenter for the recognition!
