Year Without a Sun is an ongoing project by Anna May Kirk, supported by the 2024 Christine and Stephen Procter Fellowship and developed between ANU Glass School and on residency in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.
Year Without a Sun draws upon the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. This volcanic event caused a major climatic shift here and across the globe, and is now a case study for the cultural, social and economic impacts of sudden temperature and weather shifts. Whilst on residency at ANU Glass School, Kirk developed a series of camera lenses made from melting this volcanic sand, she then travelled in October 2025 to Longyearbyen, one of the world’s northern most towns in the high Arctic, to document climatically impacted landscapes through them - landscapes that are warming 5-7 times faster than the global average. In doing so, the past climate catastrophe caused by the eruption of Mt Tambora is reanimated as an eye through which to re-see present change.
We are looking for our next domestic Procter Fellow! Funding for international travel and a residency in the Glass Workshop ANU. Please consider applying, closing in two weeks. Link in bio.
