I've been working with the Friends of Wanniassa Hills Landcare group as part of Living City, a 3 year @anuartdesign project which partners art-academics with environmental groups across Canberra. On Saturday, we ran Weaving with Weeds a public workshop using weeds and reeds to help stop erosion and provide habitat for reptiles and small birds. Overtime, the mini woven hurdles will be added to as the plant matter breaks down and more woody weeds are gathered. By harvesting some of the cumbungi reeds which had choked up the dam, we hopefully improved conditions for frogs in the process.
This woven intervention responds to the contours of the land, the tireless labour and care of the Friends of Wanniassa Hills and invited participants to make art as a collective act of restoration.
Thanks to @rebecca.mayo and the rangers from @actparks for their assistance. Thanks @artsact_ for their support of Living City.
Sharing Stories participants recently travelled to Walgalu Country, in the Tumut region of NSW.
Participants learnt first-hand about Walgalu culture with ANU academic Aidan Hartshorn and artist Shane Herrington; making stone tools and learning about native foods and skills. The group visited significant cultural sites and public artworks and ended each day yarning around the campfire. This field trip was facilitated by School of Art and Design academics Aidan Hartshorn and Dr Amanda Stuart.
Sharing Stories Arts Exchange is supported by the ACT Government.
