Behind this yearâs Australian of the Year trophies â¨
Each AOTY award was designed and hand-made at the ANU Glass Workshop, where ANU artists, technicians, and students work together to cast, grind, and polish every piece by hand. Using traditional glassmaking techniques, the trophies celebrate not just national achievement, but the skill, collaboration, and efforts of contemporary Australian glass đ
The handcrafted glass awards were presented on 24 January 2026 to: Katherine Bennell-Pegg (Australian of the Year), Professor Henry Brodaty (Senior Australian of the Year), Nedd Brockmann (Young Australian of the Year) and Frank Mitchell (Australiaâs Local Hero).
Led by AOTY Production Manager Catherine Newton with Lead Fabricator Louis Grant (who are both ANU Alumni), the Glass workshop created the 2026 trophies, rendered in a brilliant blue crystal symbolising the Australian sky.

Weâre starting 2026 with curiosity, reflection and big questions about the world ahead. đđ
For CASS student Ambassador, Gabriel Fuchina, studying PPE and IR his degree has been about learning how to think deeply, engage critically, and connect ideas to the challenges shaping our society.
"The wisdom of field experts and active discussions in class played a crucial role in building my understanding of complex concepts."
As we welcome a new year, Gabrielâs story is a reminder of the role the humanities and social sciences play in helping us understand the world weâre entering and how we might help shape it.

đRemaking MiniQ at Questacon đ Illustrator and ANU Alumni Tilda Joy combines design and science in this graduate dream job!
đ After graduating from ANU with degrees in Design and Environmental Science, and with experience working in the Questacon galleries, Tilda pitched her designs when the redevelopment process began. Over the next year she produced dozens of designs, from individual characters, to 3d models and twelve-meter murals. She says, âit's weird going into the space; I'd done all the drawings they looked really small on my computer screen and then you step into the space and it's very clear that they are everywhere!â
