The School of Art and Design is pleased to appoint Dr Kathryn Wightman
@thepowderprinter as Lecturer in Glass and Ceramics.
Currently based in New Zealand at UCOL Whanganui Creative Industries, Wightman brings over two decades of experience as an internationally recognised artist, educator, and researcher. Kathryn’s technical knowledge spans a wide range of processes across glass and ceramics, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to materials and making. While her practice is rooted in glass and print, she is particularly drawn to the shared principles between glass and ceramics, such as material behaviour, surface, and the relationship between form and function. Her work explores pattern, narrative, and materiality, resulting in objects that reflect personal stories while engaging with broader conversations in art, design, and craft. Kathryn inspires students to explore how ideas and techniques can flow between different media.
Kathryn’s career highlights include an AHRC-funded PhD from
@sunderlanduni focused on integrating glassblowing and printmaking processes. She has taught numerous masterclasses from Chicago (USA) to Bristol (UK), and most recently at the world-renowned
@pilchuckglassschool . Her international awards include the
@bullseyeprojects Emerge Glass Prize (USA), Ranamok Glass Prize (AUS), and the
@glasdk Young Glass Kvadrat Prize (DK). She has also been featured in New Glass Review and the Parkin Drawing Prize 2024. No stranger to Australia, her work In-Between was recently exhibited
@SOADGalleryANU for the Fuse Glass Prize.
At ANU, Kathryn looks forward to empowering students to push the boundaries of their creative practices.
