#ASVOFF17’s Chinese Fashion Films category celebrates the filmmakers redefining female identity in contemporary China this year. There’s an old Chinese saying that “women hold up half the sky”. A new wave of directors are playing with constructions of self in #fashionfilm: where dress becomes a pliable, dreamlike extension of the wearer, and new forms interrogate received notions of womanhood. It is a provocation, shaped by women, that unmasks what it means to dress up. Join contemporary composer Dr. Alastair White @airfromnewplanets as he begins the ambitious task of adapting James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake for the musical stage. This week-long open residency, curated by the writer Gemma A. Williams @gemmacurates , invites audiences to see opera in the making and witness how literature, theatre, fashion and music can intersect and redesign one another. The open studio offers an opportunity to engage directly with this creative process and experience opera not as a finished product — but as a living, evolving form. This inaugural event will lead to a series of works over the next decade and more: culminating in a festival 100 years after the book’s publication in 1939. 📆 Mon.
