Lieve Flott, dearest Felicity,
Vanochtend stuurde ik je nog een berichtje om te vertellen dat ik mijn liedrecital op het Internationaal Liedfestival in Zeist vandaag aan jou zou opdragen. Later die middag schreef ik je hoeveel jouw naam gevallen was, met hoeveel warmte er over je gesproken werd, en hoe geliefd je bent - niet wetend of je mijn woorden nog zou kunnen lezen. Maar ik had je beloofd om je “whatever happens” op de hoogte te houden.
Op de terugweg, net buiten Zeist, kreeg ik een bericht van je lieve dochter. Dat je vanochtend zacht en vredig bent heengegaan. Ik heb de auto aan de kant gezet en gehuild.
Meer dan tien jaar lang mocht ik jou heel dichtbij en persoonlijk ervaren. You were always on my side. Je wou niet dat ik “zangdocente” tegen je zei. Wanneer ik vroeg: “Maar wat ben je dan wél, Flott?” antwoordde je steevast: “Yes darling, just call me Flott.”
And so I will.
Flott, you were so much more than a teacher. You were an inspiration, a force of life, of music, of courage and tenderness. You taught me not only how to sing, but how to truly live.
I will miss you dearly.

📷 Ruim zeven jaar geleden studeerde ik af als dirigent aan het Lemmens bij Ivan Meylemans en Jan Van der Roost.
Op het programma van mijn masterproef stond “I Shall Love But Thee” van Jan Van der Roost met sopraan en goede vriendin @kellypoukens . Het was de aanzet voor nog vele latere samenwerkingen.
Over 2 weken - op 14 mei - brengen we hulde aan mijn leraar Jan, die dit jaar 70 wordt. Dat doen we met dezelfde soliste en dezelfde muziek als toen. Ik ben heel blij dat zowel Jan als Ivan - chef-dirigent van @harmonie_thorn - erbij kunnen zijn. Deze twee mensen hebben een blijvende indruk op mij gemaakt, zowel in de kunst van het orkestreren en arrangeren als in het leiden van een groep musici.
Dat ik dit mag doen met de @koninklijke_harmonie_van_thorn kon ik me op de dag dat deze foto’s gemaakt werden zelfs niet in mijn stoutste dromen voorstellen. Het is in de KHT dat ik vele jaren geleden voor de allereerste keer in mijn leven in een harmonieorkest speelde. “Don Juan” o.l.v. Norbert Nozy. Ik snapte er niks van.
