THOMAS MACDONAGH WAS EXECUTED 110 years ago today. Of this Tipperary man, it was said that "they all died well, but MacDonagh died like a prince," and this was likely due to the grace with which he possessed in the moments before he would die and his name would be etched so prominently into the historical record of Ireland. #EasterRising #irishheritage #irishhistory #thomasmacdonagh #cloughjordan #tipperary #irishrevolutionaries #museumlife

On this day, 110 years ago, the Easter Rising ended, and Thomas MacDonagh found himself reluctantly surrendering the Jacob's garrison of the Volunteers to the British army, who had, by the Rising's end, stationed an imposing 20,000 troops in Dublin city in order to put down the rebellion. #EasterRising #irishheritage #irishhistory #thomasmacdonagh #cloughjordan #tipperary #irishrevolutionaries #museumlife

Thomas MacDonagh, joined by his younger brother John, would, on this day 110 years ago, lead the men of the 2nd Battalion of the Irish Volunteers who had answered his call to arms, alongside members of Cumann na mBan and Na Fianna Éireann, as well as Major John McBride, from St. Stephen’s Green to Jacob’s Biscuit Factory, the fortress like building which offered MacDonagh and his men a panoramic view of Dublin city throughout what would become the Easter Rising of 1916. #EasterRising #irishheritage #irishhistory #thomasmacdonagh #cloughjordan #tipperary #irishrevolutionaries #museumlife

The familial impact of the tragedy which the Irish revolutionary period wrought on the MacDonagh family can be summarised briefly by what is contained within the 1926 census return for Donagh and Barbara MacDonagh, Thomas and Muriel's children. Living as boarders in the home of a teacher named Esther Dowling, the full tragedy of the execution of Thomas in 1916, and Muriel’s 1917 death was borne out in a simple but lamentable statement which read ‘both parents dead’ in regards to Donagh and Barbara’s status in the new state. #1926Census #thomasmacdonagh #museumlife #cloughjordan #IrishHeritage #tipperary #irishhistory

THE QUALITY OF MACDONAGH as a representative of the burgeoning Irish Republic was perfectly exemplified 110 years ago, in his role as the intermediary between his academic colleague at UCD, Eoin MacNeill, the Chief of Staff of the Volunteers at the time, and the military council of the IRB (onto which he had only just been co-opted in early April, 1916) who were seeking MacNeill’s support for what they planned to be a military strike against the British during Easter Week. #EasterRising #irishheritage #irishhistory #thomasmacdonagh #cloughjordan #tipperary #irishrevolutionaries #museumlife

WHILE A COMMANDANT IN THE IRISH VOLUNTEERS, and a key player in the military planning of the 1916 strike for Irish freedom, MacDonagh was active throughout April 1916 in both the recruitment and galvanising of the Irish Volunteers. https://nationalarchives.ie/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/CSO-JD-2-244.pdf. #EasterRising #irishheritage #irishhistory #thomasmacdonagh #cloughjordan #tipperary #irishrevolutionaries

IN EARLY APRIL, 1916, THOMAS MACDONAGH became the seventh and final member of the military council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who were then finalising plans for the insurgency which would become known as The Easter Rising. #EasterRising #thomasmacdonagh #irishhistory #irishheritage #museumlife
