“Carrot for Girls” by Matthew Thurber (@mrswilliamhorsley ), published by PictureBox (@dannadel ), 2005 🖼 I have been following along with the mythopoetic journey of comics auteur, Matthew Thurber, for nearly two decades, beginning with 1-800-MICE and on into his subscription-only Pirates of the Condominium comic/newsletter... And now cast in the role of publisher for his latest bevy of serialized comic books, ‘Looking for the Cat’, which I’ve spent the last two years following through every nuance, and local folkloric reference. From this, I’ve been inspired to dive back through his previous work, and plumb the depths of the process that led up to the present. Low and behold, there was someone selling Thurber’s first comic on eBay, and I jumped at the chance to get it alongside a few other rare tabloid-sized newspapers by CF & Ben Jones, Marc Bell & Peter Thompson, and Frank Santoro. So many of the same character archetypes and themes show up in this early work that still circulate in novel and unexpected ways in his latest comics. All of it building some kind of incidental literary mega-structure, or simply churning for the vital sake of creation itself! As you will, Mr. Thurber, count me in for the adventure 🫡 #MatthewThurber #picturebox #ganzfeld #CarrotForGirls #manytendrilsofthepresent

“Looking for the Cat - Issue 7” by Matthew Thurber (@mrswilliamhorsley ), published by #NeoglyphicMedia 🖤🔨❤️ Covering roughly 200 years of history, telescoping like a Spanish pirate’s spyglass, infolding the faked death of Kurt Cobain and his subsequent use as a sex slave for the Egyptian population of cat worshipers who were suddenly stranded in the San Juan Islands after the breakup of Pangaea; the time distortions of Dirty Dan Harris; and the mysterious disappearance of Bargain Betty’s Camel, a famous advertisement for a Lummi Nation fireworks shack: all wrapped around the spirit journey of a mouse detective whose flirtations with The Devil may have cost him his family, true love, and his leg. 😱 24 pages, 7.25” x 9”, Risograph printed with Bright Red, Cornflower, and Black covers, and interior pages in Burgundy! Two-year anniversary issue! Edition of 300 copies. 🌊💦 This seventh issue was released back in December, and premiered simultaneously at @pioneerworks #PressPlay in NY and @comicartsla in Los Angeles, where it sold out on the first day! #lookingforthecat #matthewthurber #groomfiend #1800mice #kurtcobain #HarrySmith #Catopia

Buckle up, gentle listener, for a whirlwind tour of the comic art (and life & times) of Lummi Island’s Golden Boy, Brooklyn’s Hottest Dad, and Art Comics’ Secret Weapon, @mrswilliamhorsley ! Matthew is the author of 1-800-MICE, Infomaniacs (@dannadel ), Art Comic, Mr. Colostomy (@drawnandquarterly ), Vector Hugo, Pirates of the Condominium — and most recently Looking for the Cat, an ongoing series published by @futurespeciman . We begin with Looking for the Cat, set in Matthew’s childhood home of Lummi Island, and then travel back in time to the twilight of the George W. Bush era, when 1-800-MICE was being conceived. From there we move through two decades of Matthew’s oeuvre, and recirculate, Finnegans-Wake-like, to his latest work. Along the way we get into life as a young NYC art handler, the heady days of Picturebox, the writing of Thomas Pynchon and Raymond Roussel, Children of Men, stories with and without endings, making comics in quarantine, and making comics when your baby was just born and you’ve lost your cat. Grateful to Matthew for spending so much time with me revisiting all this work! It was a lot of fun. Thanks to @jvsonbvtler for producing the episode!
