NaNa was a pioneering punk and goth fashion retailer founded in 1976 in Santa Monica, California by Nancy Kaufman, along with close collaborators Paul Kaufman and Lynn Tyler, that became central to 1980s counterculture style in the U.S. Known especially for its shoes and boots, including early imports of Monkey Boots, Doc Martens, creepers, and skull-buckle boots.
NaNa’s helped define the aesthetic of multiple subcultures from punk to post-punk and goth to grunge, becoming a staple in underground fashion and widely sought after by youth who traded mainstream trends for expressive, outsider style. The store expanded to multiple locations and influenced national fashion long before online retail, serving as both retail space and cultural hub for underground communities.
