First introduced in its original tube form in 1964, the Neumann SM 69 FET is a legendary solid-state, large-diaphragm stereo condenser microphone designed for coincident stereo techniques (X-Y, M-S, Blumlein). Featuring two independently controlled K67/K870 capsules in a single housing, it provides high-precision audio for classical, jazz, and studio overheads, often described as a transistor-based, dual-U87.
There are a few differences between the Neumann SM69 (FET) and the USM69i, most notably that the USM69i is a modern solid-state update that integrates the pattern control switches onto the microphone body, whereas the earlier SM69 FET requires an external selector/supply. While both share the same dual-capsule design, the original SM69 FET features discrete circuitry, 9 polar patterns, and usually a little more “character” in the highs (simply due to useage), whilst the USM69i provides higher headroom and lower noise thanks to its updated circuitry.

Often dubbed (somewhat dramatically) the “U87 killer”, the CU-41 is an incredibly versatile microphone that features a dual-capsule design, with each capsule tailored to a specific frequency range (highs and mid/lows). The two signals are then blended into a single mono output, resulting in a highly detailed and exceptionally natural response that excels on both male and female vocals, piano (it’s one of our favourites for upright) and acoustic string instruments in particular.
