Mohammad Awad is an award-winning writer, director, poet, playwright and musician based in Bankstown, and this year, he has not one but two films screening at the Mardi Gras Film Festival.
One of them, Flight Risk, is a short comedy inspired by Mohammad’s real-life experience of being racially profiled and interrogated at an airport, turning a moment of trauma into sharp, personal storytelling.
He sat down with Mon Schafter to talk about the film, and the mission behind his production company, Full-Fat.

When Mohammad Awad was 15 his father dropped him off at the airport.
He was catching a flight to visit his mother, who was living in Dubai.
Rather than enjoying the excitement of his upcoming trip, he was stopped by airport security and accused of intending to join ISIS.
He used the interrogation as inspiration for his latest comedy short, Flight Risk.
"When you live at these intersections of all these identities, you have to sort of split yourself up
when you walk into these rooms," Mohammad told 702 ABC Radio Sydney presenter Hamish Macdonald.
"You think that being Arab and Muslim in this space is scary and terrifying, but maybe my queerness will save me - it doesn't actually.”
Flight Risk is screening at the 2026 Mardi Gras Film Festival.

Last night, we announced THE Dominique Jackson would be visiting Melbourne next month for our inaugural MQFF Tribute.
Filmmaker and Pitch Pleez! 2025 Winner Mohammad Awad already thought that screening their @fullfatprod short alongside ‘Queens of the Dead’ was a big deal, but what they didn’t know was that Dominique would be attending the festival in person.
Here’s a conversation that MQFF team member and social media guru @michaelsaliiba had with filmmaker @_3awadi breaking the news.
