We’re excited to share that our Artistic Director, Nick Power, is currently in London attending @breakinconvention , the world’s largest festival of hip hop dance theatre! Joining Nick on the trip is street dancer @dechengendun , a previous collaborator and mentee, whose attendance marks an exciting opportunity to deepen her exposure to the international hip hop dance scene. This experience supports Force Majeure's ongoing commitment to artist development and mentorship, creating pathways for the next generation of voices in this field. While on the trip, Nick will be attending performances, rehearsals and workshops and reconnecting with artists and collaborators from around the world. Our Executive Director Amy Morcom will step down in June after three and a half years with the company. Amy has been an integral part of the company’s leadership, supporting artists, partnerships and projects with care, rigour and generosity. Her departure comes during an exciting transition following the appointment of Nick Power as Artistic Director and CEO. Amy said: “It was a difficult decision, particularly as I’ve been having a great time cooking up plans with Nick. Knowing the company has another strong leader at the helm, it feels like the right moment for me to close this chapter, take a pause, and move into new learnings and adventures. I know I’ll miss some impressive and meaningful work with Nick and the company - the FOMO is real! - but I’m excited to see where the company goes next.” We are now recruiting for a new Executive Producer to join us in this exciting new chapter, with applications closing Sunday 3 May. Full details are available on our website. We warmly thank Amy for her significant contribution and wish her all the best for what’s ahead.

Get to know Force Majeure’s AD, Nick Power: Part VI Nick’s most recent work, Deejay X Dancer was commissioned by Sydney Opera House in 2022, featuring world champion turntablist @djtotaleclipse alongside three of Australia’s most respected breakers - Demi Sorono, Jackson Garcia & Anastasios Repousis. Deejay x Dancer walked the tightrope of live performance in a thrilling call and response showdown, highlighting the skill, playfulness and connection between these two traditional hip hop forms in a celebration of the intricate interplay between dancer and the decks. Riffing on this initial spark from the birth of hip hop culture almost 50 years ago, Deejay x Dancer merges past and contemporary influences to push the boundaries of the form. The work has toured to New Annual Festival, Darwin Festival and Merrigong Theatre Company, and most recently played at Carriageworks followed by and international season in Vanuatu. Get to know Force Majeure’s AD, Nick Power: Part V “Being in a crew is the cornerstone of hip hop culture. It means you belong. You will build skills together, rock shows, battle rivals and turn the party out. Creativity fuelled by fun, friendship, community and competition. No overarching bureaucracy, administrators or managers. A pure dance entity. Each crew has its own story and reason for being. This show is about two crews – Riddim Nation and Lady Rocks.” – Nick Power Nick's next collaboration brought together two leading dance crews for an exhilarating immersion in global hip hop dance culture, aptly titled Two Crews. Two Crews (2020) put all-female Parisian crew Lady Rocks and Western Sydney group Riddim Nation to the test in a high energy display of fierce style, crew tactics and party rocking fun and funk. Two Crews was commissioned by @sydney_festival , @adelaidefestival and @brisbanefestival through the Major Festivals Initiative (MFI) Fund with support from @creative.australia Sadly, Lady Rocks crew member Marie-Priska Caillet passed away in 2021. An incredible dancer, friend and an integral part of this work. We send our love to Lady Rocks Crew. Full credits in video. #australianhiphop #hiphop

Get to know Force Majeure’s AD, Nick Power: Part IV Following the success of Nick's first work, Cyper, came Between Tiny Cities, a duet between Darwin's Aaron Lim and Phnom Penh's Erak Mith, developed over 3 years through a cross-cultural exchange between hip hop artists from Australia and Cambodia produced by Britt Guy from ACCOMPLICE. “Between Tiny Cities is a beautiful, bravely presented duet that tells how two competitors from different milieus discover commonalities through dance.” – O-Ton, Berlin, August 2018 Between Tiny Cities premiered at @dancemassive in 2017 and had an extensive touring life including throughout Asia: Phnom Penh, Hong Kong Festival, Georgetown Festival, as well as three tours through Europe including Tanz Im August (Berlin), Impulz Tanz (Vienna) and Sziget Festival (Budapest) and a 5 week tour through the UK including Breakin Convention (Sadlers Wells), Belfast International Arts Festival, Manchester (Contact Theatre) and Norfolk and Norwich Festival. In Australia the work toured to Sydney Opera House, Darwin Festival, Arts Centre Melbourne, throughout Arnhem Land and the NT. The work was nominated for a Green Room Award and an Australian Dance Award. Sadly, Erak Mith passed away in 2023. Get to know Force Majeure's AD, Nick Power, Part III: In 2012, Nick was the recipient of the Australia Council dance residency at the @citedesartsparis . This residency, alongside his time in the remote Aboriginal community of Lajamanu, inspired his first full length independent work, Cypher. Cypher was a seminal Australian work, inspiring a new generation of hip hop makers to take up practice. Based on a hip hop dance ritual, Cypher brought the audience in close and used the codes, signals and etiquette of hip hop culture, bridging the gap between the street and the theatre in meaningful ways. Cypher premiered at @darwinfestival in 2014 and has since toured to major European dance festivals and throughout Australia including @sydney_festival , @sydneyoperahouse , Tanz im August (Berlin) and URB Festival (Helsinki). Get to know our new Artistic Director, Part ✌️: After his beginnings as a B*Boy and co-founder of Channel Direct hip hop studio, Nick Power went on to create work with @tracksdance and Stalker Theatre, giving him a path forward into community-based work and contemporary performance practice. "I was youth choreorgapher on the Milpirri project in the remote Indigenous community of Lajamanu through Tracks Dance 2004 - 2013. Milpirri is a bilingual, bicultural performance that is internationally acclaimed for its community engagement and intercultural collaboration. "This project had a massive effect on my thinking around culture and performance. It made me question: what is my culture? What are my rituals? Seeing this through a hip hop lens laid the ground for my independent practice." - Nick Power From 2007–2013, Nick was an Associate Artist with Stalker Theatre, where he created three dance works. StiltBreak and Elevate fused the company’s signature stilt acrobatics and aerial work with breaking, based on concepts conceived by David Clarkson. Both works toured across Europe and Central America. His third work, Compartmentalized, brought together dancers from Sydney and Hong Kong in collaboration with Unlocked Dance Company. By this time, Nick began expanding his practice beyond choreography into curatorial and platform-building work. He went on to become the founding Artistic Director of Platform Hip Hop Festival (2008–2012), produced by @carriageworks . The annual festival celebrated hip hop culture through dance battles, theatre performances, graffiti competitions, live music, film screenings and symposiums, bringing together artists from across Australia and around the world. Get to know Force Majeure's new Artistic Director: Part I Nick Power is a B*boy and Choreographer whose work draws on the rituals and culture of hip hop to create contemporary performances. His cross-cultural practice spans from remote Aboriginal communities to the stages of the most prestigious contemporary dance festivals in Europe. Crossing complex divides of place, culture, language, and form is Nick’s forté. "I began breaking in the early 90’s in Toowoomba, renting video tapes like Beat Street, learning the moves by watching them in slow mo and then testing my mettle at the school socials or local blue light disco." 📼 Nick went on to build his skills in the Australian hip hop scene through dance battles and club shows. He was a founding member of Gravity Warriors Crew, competing and performing across Australia. The crew also collaborated with funk band, Resin Dogs, as part of their stage show, performing with them at events like Big Day Out. By the late 90's Nick had opened a hip hop studio, Channel Direct, turning an old karate dojo into a hub for classes, battles, and events. This led to providing youth workshops for First Nations communities, recent migrants and refugees, using hip hop as a shared language to connect the local community.
