@elvis_gleeson and @fizzy_issy_ both love jazz fusions, great conversations on a night out, and a buzzing dance floor, so we’re hosting Jazz and Friends. This is a chance to experience jazz in a social and uninhibited setting; not as background music or a seated concert, but as something rhythmic, open, communal and alive. We’re cultivating a space that feels safe to be yourself as you’re welcomed into a colorful new world for the night. MUSIC — Our lineup features @rushhour.5 joined by @mncappo , @this.way.orkestra , @6 , and Garaújo; bringing together contemporary jazz, jazz-hop/hip-hop, afrobeat, afrofunk, ska, and minimal house fusions. ART — We’ll have live art from @thiagodclaus_art creating an original work in response to the sights and sounds of the night. You’re free to join him! We’re supplying paint and open canvases for anyone to get inspired and immersed. DANCE — You can expect a zero judgement environment where you’re equally free to kick back on a couch while chatting with new and old friends, or dance your heart out on Blank’s open air rooftop. A buzzy jazz fusion night with live art! Something that felt colourful, warm, energetic, and open. So, we’ve put together a creative lineup of @this.way.orkestra , @rushhour.5 , @mncappo , Garaújo, and @ 6 to perform a night of jazz-hop and jazz fusions of afrobeat/afrofunk, ska, and minimal house, with @thiagodclaus_art creating live art responsively to the music. In the spirit of jazz, this event is taking place on an open air rooftop in the middle of the city! Still buzzing off that high!! Featuring Canberra's bboys and bgirls, The Hip Hop Civic Cypher was a chance for the local breaking and hip hop scene to get down and show off that Canberra style. We were so lucky to have all ages come through on Saturday (from 6 years old to bboys who've been breaking since the 2000s!). Thank you @passionandpurposeacademy for showcasing your breaking kids on the day and to everyone for coming through to break it down with us!! We did it!!! Thank you so much to everyone who came along and made The Hip Hop Civic Cypher come alive. What an absolute blast we had! I can't thank everyone enough for making my dream of bringing together all the elements of hip hop with all the vibrancy and talent that Canberra has to offer, that is, the people of Canberra, truly come to life. I'm still beaming and replaying every moment of the day. This wouldn't have happened without my band @rushhour.5 bringing back live hip hop instrumentals and eagerly supporting me with my idea to play music for dancers live. It also wouldn't have happened without the drive and enthusiasm that our MC @mncappo brings constantly to the hip hop scene and community more broadly. Cappo, your constant positivity and can-do attitude that you had in supporting me and the scene, is keeping hip hop and Canberra alive and thriving. Having the support of @berrabars bringing the rap element of hip hop to the Hip Hop Civic Cypher was awesome. In today's age of modern hip hop, I think it's easy to forget the simple roots of hip hop as connecting with community through creative expression of the different art forms (break, MC, DJ, graff) that developed from a time of shared struggle and experience. It's easy to get into the silos of each art form, focus on improving your craft, even focusing on just competing/battling, and forget, we're all just navigating this complex world together and these art forms came out of trying to express ourselves in all the chaos and confusion, and finding connection and direction through it all. Thank you @theunkajedartist @edddie__mo and Hone for your incredible art work and bringing street art alive right in the middle of the city for people to see. The Hip Hop Civic Cypher is kicking off in Canberra's iconic Garema Place in 2 weeks! ✨ What is it? ✨ ~~The Hip Hop Civic Cypher is a totally community run event and all artists are volunteering their time and sharing their skills and art in the good name of community and hip hop. The event is open to the public and encourages dancers and rappers to jump in and show off their style! Join in as part of @ausdanceact 's National Dance week festivities and support the local artists. Prizes are up for grabs thanks to the generosity of local businesses @impactcomics @goodgamesaus @sanchosdirtylaundry . ~ The Black Owl Quartet ~ Playing at the @old_canberra_inn tomorrow (8th May) at 6:30pm. ALSO playing in Sydney this Saturday (11th May) at 7:30pm at @moshpit.bar on King St to open for Marcus and Ash's other band, @hekateband . Two extremely contrasting genres of gypsy jazz and doom metal in one night?! Bang for your buck really. I became part of this magical gypsy jazz band because Marcus and Ash (guitarists) were busking outside of an IGA at Lyneham shops one weekend. I walked past and thought, gosh they're good. Then couldn't help but turn back to them and ask where and how I could see them play next. Marcus asked if I played an instrument. I said I played the violin and piano. And he asked if I was any good at the violin. I said I was alright. He asked if I wanted to come jam with them. And next we knew it we were jamming outdoors in fields of green grass and playing regular gigs. Little did I realise these guys were also metal heads and the sweetest and kindest men ever. @depasqualemarcus , @seekeroftheserpentseye , Lachlan thank you for giving me the opportunity to make music. ❤️ I never took myself seriously as a musician but man, making music with people with passion for music, taking that time and energy, playing off each other's energies, and putting it into creating this audible art, that is pure musicianship, art and just magic. I always looked up to my sister as a musician, having studied at the conservatorium and being a professional cellist. And last weekend, after pressuring myself to practice piano because I wanted to accompany her playing cello at her friend's wedding, she said to me, "wow you're such a musician". And that was an incredible thing to hear. Thanks for pushing me and supporting me, Cath, even if it was slightly stressful at times 😅🥰. @branded_by_the_cross Spontaneity and not thinking too much about the choices you make can make for some magical times 🥰.
