Fernanda Froes 2026 Lapis Lazuli: rotas 30 x 22.5 in Gum arábica with ultramarine pigment on cotton paper, embroidered with golden thread RE.IMAGINATION exhibition at Pablo Atchugarry Foundation Natural pigment takes on a global approach in the work of Fernanda Froes whose works on paper pay homage to the reimagined history of lapis lazuli, one of history’s most important and widely traded minerals used for “ultramarine” blue ever since the Ancient world. In her work, Froes not only retraces the trade routes of this important mineral, but also brings a contemporary approach to one of the Renaissance’s most important painters, Giotto, known for using lapis lazuli in his iconic blue skies, dotted with gilded stars. Here, however, Froes inverts land and sky, marking historic mining sites and mineral deposits on natural lapis pigment, resulting in an reimagined mappa mundi. Additionally, Froes reframes historical pigment-making into her contemporary work, turning to mediums like egg tempera and gum arabic as the foundation of her work, pulling directly from early modern art treatises, including the 15th-century “Livro de como se fazem as cores” and the 17th-century “Breve tratado de iluminação.”  Curated by Ross Karlan and presented by The55Project. In collaboration with Fundación Pablo Atchugarry. On view through May 2. Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00 am-5:00 pm RE.IMAGINATION / RE.IMAGINAÇÃO presents the work of Liene Bosquê, Nino Cais, Pedro Delgado, Fernanda Froes, John Brendan Guinan, Heloísa Maia, Cássio Markowski, Maria Lira Marques, Rafael RG, and Yelaine Rodriguez. #the55project

Last week to visit “Utopia Chromatica” at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, West Palm Beach. This body of work continues my research into Brazilwood (pau-brasil) pigments, revisiting sixteenth-century dye recipes and exploring color as memory of trade, extraction, and disappearance. The works are built from hand-cut organic cotton, dyed and stitched, forming layered surfaces. A reflection on utopia not as perfection, but as something shaped by loss and the imagination of rebuilding a forest that is on the brink of disappearance. On view until February 28th Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery 2414 Florida Avenue West Palm Beach, FL33401 Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm . . #salonexhibition #kristinhjellegjerdegallery #khgallerywestpalmbeach #westpalmbeach

Salon Opening - today 📍 Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, West Palm Beach I’m proud to present my work in the gallery’s salon and to share Utopia Chromatica, a new body of work that revisits utopia as a historical construction shaped by loss, memory, and projection. Expanding on Utopia Botanica, the works propose a poetic reconstruction of a fragmented Brazilwood (Pau-brasil) forest, an iconic tree of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, nearly erased through exploitation tied to pigment extraction. Dyed, stitched, and layered fragments of organic cotton canvas, using sustainably extracted pau-brasil pigment, form partial chromatic fields crossed by threads that evoke aerial roots and suspended botanical elements. Utopia Burgundy 2025 Handcut Brazilwood-dyed organic cotton on raw canvas, brazilwood dyed threads and embroidery 82 x 60 cm 32 x 23,5 in #salonexhibition #kristinhjellegjerdegallery #khgallerywestpalmbeach #westpalmbeach

Salon opening at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, West Palm Beach. I’m proud to present my work at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s salon and to invite you to Utopia Chromatica, a new body of work that revisits utopia as a historical construction shaped by loss, memory, and projection. Expanding on Utopia Botanica, the work proposes a poetic reconstruction of a fragmented Brazilwood (Pau-brasil) forest, the iconic tree of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, nearly driven to extinction through colonial exploitation tied to pigment extraction. Composed of dyed, stitched, and layered fragments of cotton canvas using sustainably extracted pau-brasil pigment, the works form partial chromatic fields crossed by threads that evoke aerial roots and suspended botanical elements. Drawing from sixteenth-century Portuguese dye recipes, color shifts emerge through chemical reactions, transforming pigment into a spectrum of tones. In Utopia Chromatica, color becomes both material and concept, a space of critical reflection and resistance against historical erasure and ongoing processes of disappearance. Froes’s Mangrove series draw inspiration from the resilience of coastal ecologies, intertwining natural materials and layered processes to evoke regeneration, interdependence, and migration. Mangrove pigment on raw canvas, embroidered with threads dyed with mangrove pigment. 47.2 x 35.3 inches Mangrove pigment on cotton paper, embroidered with threads dyed with mangrove pigment. Size: 8 x 10 in | 13.5 x 11 inches . @the55project
