Meet Florida Prize Artist Francisco Masó!
Masó (Havana, 1988) is a Cuban-born, AfroLatinx conceptual artist living and working in Miami. He received a Bachelor's degree in Stage Design from the Higher Institute of Art (2014).
Maso’s work delves into the contemporary understanding of “unconscious behaviors” and challenges what is accepted by society as natural, necessary, and normal. As a conceptual artist, he examines the systems of power, patterns of control, violence, and unspoken codes in scenarios of repression, drawing on his personal experiences in Cuba, Japan, and the United States.
See his work on view at the Orlando Museum of Art's 12th annual Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, opening May 30, 2026.
This one feels even more special 🤩 I’m deeply grateful to @oolitearts for their sustained commitment to Miami artists. From supporting @placingpoliticalart to my first residency in the U.S. at @atlanticcenterforthearts and @andersonranchartscenter to group exhibitions and multiple awards; Oolite has been instrumental in the development of my practice.
Now, in its ninth edition, I’m honored to be selected as a 2026 Ellies Creator Award recipient and to receive $10,000 in unrestricted support. We don’t often speak enough about the impact this kind of support has on the careers of emerging artists. In my case, it provides the resources to produce new work that I’m excited to share soon ➡️ more to come.
Thank you @oolitearts and everyone on their team whose vision continues to sustain this program. If you haven’t yet, please consider supporting and reserving your spot for the ceremony.

After nine hours of travel and two days of jet lag, I’m checking in from @citedesartsparis in the 4th arrondissement. Thanks to @bakehouseartcomplex for this incredible opportunity. 🤩
For the next few months, this will be my home: a place for living, dreaming, loving, and making art. If you’re in town, or know someone I should connect with, don’t hesitate to visit and reach out.

@bakehouseartcomplex , Miami and the @citedesartsparis , Paris are proud to announce the selection of Francisco Maso as the 2026 Laureate for the Bakehouse x Cité internationale des arts residency program. Francisco is the fourth Bakehouse artist to be chosen through a competitive juried process for a two-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris taking place from May to June 2026.

Gracias, Gloria Noemy López Herrera, community leader of our exhibition Nuestro Vaivén (Our Sway) ✨
On view at @TheRingling through March 22, 2026
Inspired by a friend who didn’t go to museums but once asked, “Can you get me a museum for a party?”
Pairing artists from across Central and South Florida with 4 Sarasota community leaders—individuals who had not previously seen themselves as belonging in the art world—this exhibition of Latin art is inspired by these Latin leaders. In fact, the leaders are completing the collaborative artistic process by designing celebrations for their communities inside the exhibition, as part of the art. In this way, Nuestro Vaivén honors Latin life itself as art and expands how museums listen to and serve the public.
If museums have historically intimidated the very publics they now hope to welcome, what does it mean to center people who were not originally conceived as their audience?
Here, Latin life is not programmed around the exhibition. It is the exhibition.

✨Goal achieved: fewer photos, more lived experiences.
2025 brought deeply enriching moments for which I am profoundly grateful. From participating in a long-term, process-based exhibition in collaboration with @edisonpenafielstudio under the vision of @amyrosenblummartin at @theringling ; to enrolling in seminars on Afro-Brazilian art at @icamiami ; to driving 21 hours to attend the pottery workshop of @tomoohamada , hosted by @theastergates at @rebuild_foundation ; to opening my first solo exhibition on the West Coast at @luisdejesuslosangeles and joining a meaningful conversation with my dear @carameganlewis at @wendemuseum .
In between, @aldeide_delgado and I did what we love most: exploring the world, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones, and making art.
May 2026 bring health, joy, peace, and prosperity to all. 🥂🎊✨

✨I’m deeply grateful to share the recent acquisition of my photograph “Seated Body with Closed Fists and Tense Abdomen” (2018) from the series “Obtuse Exercises for Dissenting Bodies” (2018–ongoing) into the @pamm collection, made possible through funds provided by Maria C. Bechily.
“Obtuse Exercises for Dissenting Bodies” is a project oriented to research, through photo-performance, the positions assumed by dissident bodies in their relation with police control dispositive. These are exercises based on the violent movements that take place in confrontation scenes of the political power with the resistance groups of civil society.
My sincere thanks to @iberiaperez for her interest and for facilitating this process, and to @renebot2 and @aldeide_delgado for their support.

And finally, I posted it. ✨
A few months ago, I had the joy of welcoming @gabyojedaphoto , a brilliant photographer in our South Florida community, WOPHA family member, and dear friend, into my studio. She walked in right in the middle of a creative storm🌪️ nights without sleep, a worktable overflowing with sketches, notes, and paint tubes, color stripes covering every corner.
Gaby witnessed that exact moment when I was producing my first solo show on the West Coast, “Francisco Masó: #DocumentaryAbstraction”, @luisdejesuslosangeles —an exhibition exploring the relationship between abstract painting and archival reference images.
Her lens reflects order into a chaotic space. I couldn’t be more grateful. 🙏
