PS1 has been a gift to New York for 50 years! This essential and sprawling exhibition space for art and ideas founded by and created out of thin air by Alanna Heiss has given countless artists their first public exposure in America. That it still not only exists but thrives is something of a miracle, as was clear from the crowd and the tributes to Heiss from a gracious #glennlowry and sparkling @laurieandersonofficial at Monday’s 50th anniversary gala, where the former @themuseumofmodernart director also was honored and spoken for by @lemon.ralph - an unholy sacred space if ever there was one. Congrats to @cornelia.butler and all of @momaps1 ‼️ #alannaheiss @carolynchristovbakargiev@klausbiesenbach@michaelstipe too!
Happy 250 birthday, America - from Richard Prince, Arthur Jafa, Nancy Spector, and Miuccia Prada in Venice. Read all about in this story for @theartnewspaper.official - link in bio. @anamibia@nespector #richardprince
This year’s opening week of @labiennale in Venice was about a lot more than art, but art is the reason to go - other than Venice itself. I wrote two pieces, one about the scene for @artforum and a preview of what is a real happy birthday greeting to the USA for @theartnewspaper.official (next post). Links to full accounts in bio.
Surprise! A game and fairly chaste, wholly self-made @cicciolina_official performing last night before a young singalong crowd of fans @whiterabbitcannery in Venice, invited by artist Maya Malou Lyse for the Danish Pavilion (where there are several animated sperm racers) in @labiennale and brought to us by @traumaisforever - all kinds of fun and folly to be had here night after night. (And now and then some substance too)
I do not know what this is but one sees examples of such mysterious, stop-in-the-name-of-astonishment sights on any random walk in Rome, ancient or modern, day or night. Some right outside your door. @amacademyrome

My report on the reopening of the @newmuseum for @artforum with excerpts and a few views of “New Humans” that aren’t in the published story. Link in bio
Pat Steir always said she had two birthdays (and celebrated both,)but was allowed only one last day to make peace with pain that ate her body but was no match for the killer spirit with which she beat it back for years by making one beautiful new painting after another just about to the end. A formidable woman. For me she was a kind of teacher whose piercing insight and unbudging faith in my projects often kept me going at my most despairing. She put so much wisdom and kindness into the world. She was a great beauty who didn’t tolerate bull. Honest to a fault. Fiercely loyal to her friends and family. Laughed our way through many a dinner she hosted with Joost, where I met so many fantastically accomplished people who are all hard to equal. She told me this happy picture with #bricemarden was a big favorite, which pleased me, and I know how much she loved and admired her friend and sometime collaborator @annewaldman whom i met through Pat and esteem highly. I was glad to catch them together too. Only wish I had more, there are so many other matchless people whose lives Pat affected like a serene waterfall splashing onto enduring rocks. May she rest in ongoing peace. My heart goes out to Joost and her niece Lily, who stayed with her to the end, God bless them.
R.I.P. artist and performer #agostomachado he was among my first cohort in New York in the early 70’s, a generation of groundbreakers decimated by the AIDS pandemic - we survived it in tandem. I was always so happy to see him and thrilled by his late-life recognition as an artist by MoMA and the current Whitney Biennial, but I remember him best in his indelible performances with Ethyl Eichelberger. He was such a sweetheart and remains very dear. 💔💔
R.I.P. Tad Tompkins, personal superhero for decades, and deepest sympathies to his devoted, magnificent wife @dodietad #calvintomkins would never use a smartphone or an app in all of his 100 years, but I can’t help it. I might never have begun to satisfy my early no nothing curiosity about Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, or the life of an art writer if not for him. Undying gratitude. 💔💔
