“As an artist I feel it is my responsibility to help break down colonial signifiers as an act of historical, personal and public healing. Symbols, images and text have solidified the nationstate of ‘Australia’; flags, coats of arms, heraldic imagery, insignia and landscape depictions have all been reproduced in educational and historical books using the print technologies of the time. These books present ‘Australian’ history and colonial cultural and legal ownership in such a way as to help allow the British Empire and the Australian Government to represent its power with authority through the technology of print.
Through visually and chemically disintegrating and examining these images and breaking free the natural symbols within, using the same technology of print, I hope to create space to transmute them anew.”
