Self portraits I’ve taken recently… Which do you like best?
I got an email the other day from an aspiring photographer wanting to join my team. Maybe I should clarify… there’s no team here , just one person. My intent is not to scale an empire or put a dent in the universe . This is my personal journey and I can’t outsource the process .
I’ve been on the road since my wife ghosted me in 2013.. I’ll never forget stepping out of that apartment. They didn’t give me a refund on that month, and it felt like the end of the world. Haven’t paid rent since . Couch hopping eventually led to the fetal position in the backseat. My back started hurting, so I got an air mattress and slept on the ground next to my corolla. With this setup I traveled thru 10 states, 10 countries all the way to South America.
I had a year of lonely nights on the road. Often wondered what I was doing, and what was to come, but never questioned that it was where I needed to be. Under the stars in silence, face nuzzled close to my tire.
I’ll never stop telling my story because I’m freaking proud of it. Put yourself first. What’s that thing you thought about as a kid? Mine was, “ I wonder how far this road goes?” We always turned off to get to where we had planned to go. But what if the only objective was to see what was at the far end? When I indulged I found the end near Panama City.. sold the car down there cause didn’t have enough money to make it home. I’ll be thinking about this on my death bed, with tears in my eyes.

A sunset with the birds. Easily one of the best vantages in the Valley.
Saw and heard a number of ravens up here, have you guys watched The Dark Wizard yet?
Post 2 from my recovered SD card. Slides 2-4 explain… Full story saved to my story highlights.
Song on slide 1: “I Need My Girl” by @thenational

If you’re into alpenglow this is your spot… standing right in front of Half Dome’s sheer wall as the last bit of sun transformed into orange was completely surreal. I had to crank down the saturation slider to make this an appropriate photo to look at. Most natural neon display I’ve ever seen.
Post 1 from the SD card that I found in a bush after my camera fell off the cliff, smashed itself so hard that the card flew out.

It was a dark night last night… luckily the village lights lit up the falls just enough.
A shot that’s been in my mind’s eye for so long now… I have a lot more photos to go thru from last night , including some with a lined up Milky Way over the Village… but I liked how this one turned out. More to come.

That one time we crossed the Andes on horseback.
Stats provided by my @suunto Vertical 2 Watch. Stoked to have all this info to look back on and repaint the picture. This was a tough trip for me! Never have been a big horse guy, so it was fun to push myself.

Feeling more like an ant than a human next to Upper Yosemite Falls.
I guess this is an unofficial ad for Sony… but I thought this was a great example of why I advocate for:
A) A high resolution sensor camera , I use the @sonyalpha 7cR with 61 mega pixels.
B) It’s always better to shoot wider than you would want to in the moment.
The original image is shot at 17mm. Second image is cropped into what would be about 70mm. This specific shot was set up on a tripod as the last bit of light was hitting Yosemite Falls. I only had time for one framing , so I shot wide, and figured I could crop later.

Drove up to the Sierra on a whim after @joeshike told me about a secret waterfall. I was immediately in. Then I realized that the crew was already congregating in the Valley, so I had to say hello.
I am living in my good ole days. Not too long ago I was doing this alone. That’s just how it had to start for me… and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s what’s holding a lot of people back from going for it. I think the secret to meeting your people is to be the person you want to meet. So grateful to have friends who inspire me, and are willing to bushwhack and throw Frisbees and play card games into the night.
