Moved by the outdoors There has always been something personal about the worlds created by Italian designer Paola Lenti, even though she herself does not take center stage in the company she founded in 1994, as she used to. Paola Lenti was a trained graphic designer before she made a name of herself with a series of handwoven rugs in stunning color combinations. Then she set out to create a life in dialogue with nature as if it was happening indoor. Voluminous sofas, armchairs, parasols, poufs, floating, sunbeds, you name it. The shapes, the feel of the fabrics and the color combinations. It was unparalleled. I can still feel the breeze in the warm air that one time @isaloniofficial The rustic walls of what I remember as an old monastery, the captivating shapes, the textures, and the lighting—all coming together in such a wonderful harmony with one another and with us visitors. I am in no doubt that the universe this woman has built up year after year has made a difference for people. And it comes as no surprise that her company entered into a collaboration with Swedish designer Monica Förster. They found common ground in their poetic approach, where emotional solutions meet thorough material research and construction methods. Last year, Monica presented the Lazy Chair in Paola Lenti fabrics and ropes for indoor use; this year, an outdoor version was introduced. It might not look like Espen ever shot a single picture of Bjørn or Niels or the Sheet Cabinet. But stay tuned; stunning pics from the event at Kollekted By are coming up here at Smallbox. Video by Smallbox #kollektedby #bjornvandenberg #frama #norskdesign #smallboxmagazine

It took 8 years! Although it was @carlhansenandson who contacted @eoosdesign and asked if they could design a new wooden dining chair, it took eight years before the founders og EOOS, Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl, were able to present something they felt could hold its own against Hans H. Wegner’s iconic wooden designs. Now the lounge version of Embrace has been released. EOOS has a patented analytical method, called Poetical Analysis®, in which they examine everything from Carl Hansson as a company to Wegner and wood materials to find a solution. Embrace envelops you with its slender frame, inviting you to stroke the turned, soft wooden details. The chair is designed for outdoor use, but is so delicate and comfortable to sit in that it can be moved indoors and outdoors with the seasons. Point taken It is always a pleasure to meet Christine Ingridsdotter. She is the owner of the production company @ingridsdotterstockholm that produces the designs of Jonas Bohlin. This year she is launching the Point Chair, which was designed by Jonas Bohlin in 1985. - The chairs are made here in Sweden by the finest craftsmen. I have very high standard when it comes to the quality of materials, the craftsmanship and the original design, says Christine. Ingridsdotter has a prominent role in the Swedish design scene and her work is a great advocate for spreading information about Swedish design around the world. - It’s so important that we show we’re relevant in an international market, and to do that we need to be able to invite people here. Just walking around the city makes you familiar with who Jonas Bohlin is through all the restaurants he has designed, she says, sharing a fun fact that Jonas was inspired by circuses when he designed the restaurant Riche. - He wanted to take guests into another universe where anything can happen. Are you going to Stockholm? Then a visit to @svenskttenn is a must. This is not just a shop, but a living interior design magazine. In constantly changing exhibitions, you are taken into the creative world of Estrid Ericson and Josef Frank, which never seems to go out of fashion. At the back of the store, they have set up a small café where you can sip a cup of coffee while letting inspiration flow and realizing that floral patterns, sensual shapes, and brightly colored furniture are what make you happy. The last time Smallbox visited, they had a special exhibition featuring different versions of Josef Frank's Cabinet 552, designed between 1934 and 1935. In 2026, Svensk Tenn are launching a brand new version of 552 in mahogany clad in horsehair fabric woven by @johnboydhorsehairfabric in London. They are apparently one of the few remaining manufacturers still producing horsehair fabric in the world. Lets call this slow design; each cabinet is made by Anders Mattsson in Valdemarsvik, Sweden. One glance at the price tag and you realise that a 522 might actually be more expensive than the car you drive. Have you ever tried Staffan Holm's Tilt Stool? A few years ago, Staffan Holm Studio moved its studio to Stenkullen in Sweden. With more space, they were suddenly able to start producing their own furniture series, which they sell via their website. The Tilt Stool is the second piece of self-produced furniture and attracts attention with its surprisingly simple design. What at first glance looks like a tree stump, if we are talking about the wooden version, it also comes in a 3D-printed version and even marble, is incredibly comfortable to sit on. - We are not made to sit still. I say, like the Norwegian designer Peter Opsvik; the next sitting position is the best. He experimented with seating ergonomics throughout his life, and I am a big fan of his mindset, says Staffan Holm. It has a convex underside that makes the chair tilt slightly. The top has a concave recess that makes it feel stable and comfortable to sit on. - We have worked hard to find exactly the right seat curve to create the movement and seating comfort we wanted. It's almost like sitting on a yoga balloon, Staffan explains. When stuff gets personal The architect and chef @espenveiby is not into redecorating. When he went about and renovated what is his 9th apartment or something he meticulously arranged every items in the exact way he wanted. Personal inherited artefacts are placed side by side with design objects obtained over years. All within a very delicate frame. Espen has taken the framed photograph over hos little stereo bench. It's from his first architecture project, the development of Barcode in Bispevika. What do you do when you don't find a stair you like? When renovating an original Smedstad functionalist building, architect Sixten Stavelin needed a staircase from the kitchen up to the attic. He couldn't find any ready-made staircases that he felt were suitable, so he decided to design a steel staircase. The steps are made of oak, while the banister is woven with the same type of paper cord used on the J39 dining chairs designed by Børge Mogensen. ‘It's actually leftover from an attempt at chair restoration,’ says Sixten. By placing the airy staircase along the wall facing the master bedroom, it takes up minimal space in the room. On the kitchen island, the base cabinets have been pulled in to provide ample seating space. The family often gathers here, and the island has become a central and social element in the home. The oak floor in a Dutch pattern flows seamlessly throughout the floor and makes clear references to the functionalist style. ‘Much of the reason why the result has been so successful is that the original functionalist building has solid materials and good proportions. Everything from the ceiling height to the window sizes is just right,’ says Sixten. Have you thought about boat design as an interior solution? In the renovation of a functionalist villa from 1937, architect @sixtenstavelin from @faxarkitekter wanted to utilise every square metre and designed the entire floor plan a bit like a sailing boat. "For us, it would have been natural to put the kitchen in the living room and have a long, spacious living room, but we love cooking and wanted a kitchen island we could gather around. We prioritised an intimate living room that we think is super cosy," says Sixten Stavelin. He designed the entire kitchen interior himself. The partition wall between the kitchen, bathroom and one of the children's rooms has been used as a thick functional wall with integrated storage and kitchen fittings. The solution consists of frames from Ikea combined with custom-made oak fronts. "To keep costs down, the cupboard wall on the back wall is painted instead of clad in oak. Color is cheap fun," says the architect.
