𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 oil on canvas 48 H x 36 W x 1 3/8 D inches 2024 🪽♠️♥️🗝️ currently on view at my show 𝖋𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗𝖘 𝖈𝖗𝖔𝖘𝖘𝖊𝖉 at @oneriverschool Englewood, NJ until 4/30 📸: @daniel_greer i included details of Henri Matisse’s ‘The Dessert: Harmony in Red (The Red Room) because ive been returning to this painting a lot lately (and apparently, Matisse did too ~it was first painted with a green background, then changed to blue and titled it ‘Harmony in Blue’ right before a show in 1907; then someone bought the painting at the show and he had it returned by 1908 so he could repaint the blue to red & for obvious reasons, retitled the work). if you look closely, you can see the original green peeking through at the bottom. i particularly love how the pattern on the wall continues through the tablecloth as if it were to wrap the entire room. img 4 is an installation I did last yr at @springbreakartshow where I painted the wall, floor and stools in the same pattern found in my paintings. i like to think my camouflage carpet angels would’ve been pals w Matisse’s table in another life. ngl i would be entirely taken w a Matisse themed casino carpet with all of its green/blue/red iterations (is that blasphemous idk🤷🏻‍♀️?)

𝖑𝖆𝖇𝖞𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖙𝖍 𝖊𝖋𝖋𝖊𝖈𝖙 (𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖝) oil on canvas 48h x 36w inches 2024 +➡️ 🌀in process studio vids + detail of Tiepolo’s “Discover of the True Cross” at @gallerieaccademiavenezia based on my two camoflauged carpet angels, which I attribute to Cupid and Anteros (Cupid’s counterpart/shadow self) 𝖑𝖆𝖇𝖞𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖙𝖍 𝖊𝖋𝖋𝖊𝖈𝖙 (𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖝) is currently on view in my solo show 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔤𝔢𝔯𝔰 𝔠𝔯𝔬𝔰𝔰𝔢𝔡 at @oneriverschool until 4/30 🍥 i learned the French sociologist and game theorist, Roger Caillois, claimed you can learn a lot about a civilization based on the games a culture choses to play. on the top of each column, I inscripted four terms he describes as forms of play: agon, alea, mimesis and ilinx which translates to competition, chance, role play/simulacra, and vertigo. this painting specifically leans into 𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖝🌀which is “whirlpool” in Ancient Greek. which made me think about that dizzying feeling when you’ve lost time doomscrolling or deep in a trance from playing video games, gambling, maybe even under a painting/drawing spell? ilinx represents a type of play based on the pursuit of the temporary disruption of perception. it involves activities that destroy stability, creating a “sensual panic” or “strange excitement” to induce a state of altered consciousness.

installation views of my show 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔤𝔢𝔯𝔰 𝔠𝔯𝔬𝔰𝔰𝔢𝔡 at @oneriverschool Englewood, NJ. 🤞🏽🪽🌀🏛️🪄🌕 on view until 4/30 ✨ about the show: eri king’s solo exhibition, 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔤𝔢𝔯𝔰 𝔠𝔯𝔬𝔰𝔰𝔢𝔡, stages Cupid, the god of desire, within illusionistic spaces where Classical architecture merges with the disorienting visual language of casinos. Across these paintings, desire is treated as something deliberately constructed through pattern, illusion, and spatial manipulation, linking historical techniques of visual persuasion to the scripted environments of contemporary consumer culture.  Artists of the Baroque and Renaissance periods used trompe l’oeil, heightened realism, and linear perspective to generate awe and spectacle, shaping viewers’ perceptions in ways that reinforced religious authority through carefully staged spatial experiences. Casinos operate through comparable strategies. Their kitschy patterned carpets, controlled lighting, and maze-like layouts are designed to stimulate attention, extend time spent within the space, and subtly influence behavior. By placing these systems into direct dialogue, this body of work exposes spectacle as a recurring mechanism of power that operates across both sacred and commercial contexts. Fragments of Renaissance architecture and appropriated cupids appear within dense fields of casino carpets, playing cards, mahjong tiles, and digital game symbols, where visual overload simultaneously produces stimulation and disorientation.  more info in the link in my bio 🪽 📸 by @daniel_greer ❤️‍🔥

𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙚 & 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧𝙨 🕴️💨🪞 oil on panel 24h x 18w inches 2026 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙚 & 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧𝙨 refers to a classic technique in magical illusions that makes an entity appear to hover in empty space. spread widely after its use by a charlatan who claimed to conjure spirits and now lives as an idiom that translates to obscuring/embellishing of the truth of a situation with misleading or irrelevant information. this new work was made as a counterpart to another painting of mine entitled 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙨 (img 6-8) which features an inverted version of 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙚 & 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧𝙨 where one hovers and the other carves into the blue-eyed grass pattern, a flower that symbolizes divine communication 🤞🏽 these pieces are a continuation of my #casinocarpetstudy series that explores the rumor that casino carpets are designed intentionally as an exercise in bad taste (garish & kitsch) to disorient and stimulate & keep folks alert yet unable to focus (+ to extend playing time on machines for profit). supposedly, the colors of the carpet are the same as the betting chips so when a player drops one it gets lost and camouflaged into the abyss 🕳️ 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙚 & 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧𝙨 is currently on view at @oneriverschool in Englewood, NJ until 4/30 🌸 img 1-2 📸 @daniel_greer img 3-5 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙚 & 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧𝙨 #wip in studio img 6-8 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙨 oil on panel 24h x 18w inches 2026 img 8. feat @siminaa {} 🔮🌸

(excerpt from the exhibition statement) The exhibition title, 𝖋𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗𝖘 𝖈𝖗𝖔𝖘𝖘𝖊𝖉, alludes to the moment of wishful thinking that accompanies desire, the hope that chance might bend to one’s favor even when reason suggests otherwise. This gesture connects practices of prayer and play, reflecting a shared reliance on luck, fate, or divine intervention. Crossing one’s fingers becomes both an act of optimism and a surrender of agency, sustaining participation in systems structured around chance, competition, risk, and reward. 🤞🏽🤞🏽 (+ feat one of my fave songs by some of the best earthlings @constant_smiles ) 📸 @daniel_greer
