🤭 sorry in advance for that cliffhanger ending 😨🫣 part 2 coming soon! the jaguar is an amazonian symbol of death. this incredible work by paul desenne reimagines the cello as a shamanic voice, expressing both the ancient wisdom of nature and the haunting sounds of the rainforest being ripped to pieces by chainsaws. in this electrifying section, it personifies the jaguar and its chase, keeping us running, from getting caught. i must have been feeling extra inspired and a little masochistic to decide to play this crazy piece as my encore after 40 minutes of dvořák concerto with @desiuuuuu and @scottsdalesymphonicorchestra — but so glad i got to share this incredible music in arizona! audio/video by @yipdog green cloak by @atelierrosemarieumetsu hair by @rina_koniii #newmusic #cello #classicalmusic #contemporaryclassical #cellosolo #jaguarsongs

the preludio from penderecki's suite for solo cello showcases a near-constant struggle to escape the gravity of C. i love how penderecki explores all kinds of tonal possibilities of the open c string in this opening. in doing so he expresses its totality and with it, a sense that we cannot escape out of its bounds, although the cellist certainly tries, employing physical and often violent leaps. yet the chain is always there, shackling the music to the ground. any air gained in these attempts to ascend is yanked away... truly one of the most viscerally gruesome openings written for cello. thank you so much to @stelth.ng and @triplepointemedia for making these beautiful videos and @mattantal for being a magician with sound. and of course @theroyalconservatory for allowing the use of mazzoleni hall -- always such a beautiful recording space! other videographers: @theopenscore @roland_gjernes #newmusic #cello #classicalmusic #contemporaryclassical #cellosolo

this melody used to give me anxiety. back during the pandemic, i played a concert with a (not-so-open minded) colleague who literally laughed out loud in rehearsals whenever i got to this section. i was playing it the way i felt was expressive and respectful to the music, but she clearly found it ridiculous… and i never learned why! this made it that much more daunting to approach for future performances. i’ve played this piece twice since then, first as a sub for @emersonstringquartet and then in this performance, with @rolstonquartet — frankly, i couldn’t have asked for better and more flexible colleagues in both occasions. playing such a gorgeous work with a true dream team of colleagues that are all equally invested in the music… these are the moments that can make musical life feel so rich. in this performance i was reminded why this truly is one of my favorite moments in the repertoire. please see the video itself for some of my thoughts on this section! performers: @rolstonquartet @jason.issokson @rule0917 @hezviola @shin.yoonkyung @eomnomnom @shimcello brahms: string sextet no. 1 in b-flat major venue: @hermannarthall #chambermusic #brahms #brahmssextet #cellosolo #cellistsofinstagram

this music is about war. despite being written in 1959, it speaks to some very familiar feelings: a sense of helplessness under an uncaring authority, fear, surveillance, and violence enacted at the cost of the masses. more thoughts on the music in the reel itself. orchestra: @phoenixyouthsymphonyorchestras @matthewkasperconductor audio/video: @davidthibodeaux @9thsymphonyproductions #cello #cellosolo #celloconcerto #shostakovichcelloconcerto #cellistsofinstagram

back on instagram 🤘🏼 — i had to force myself to take a short break while ramping down from a super fun+intense tour with the ever-inspiring @thaleastringquartet 🩶 this is an audience video from my giovanni sollima <l.b. files> concert with @musicanovaorchestra and @musicwarrencohen . this is the encore, where i played some luigi boccherini — the namesake of l.b. files — with a dear friend and former studiomate who is now in arizona, @dkimdotori . perhaps as is the case with all improvised cadenzi, this is far from a perfect performance and i mentally struggled with the idea of posting it. but ultimately the thought of sharing a nice moment where i felt pretty free about combining the concerto i just performed with the inspiration behind it convinced me to just do it anyway. hope you enjoy hearing this invention as much as i enjoyed making it 🙏🏼 🎥: @https.rea.d #cello #cellosolo #newmusic #celloimprovisation #celloconcerto

what to prioritize: sound, or pulse? throwback to one of the first times i worked on a piece with this type of aesthetic. at the time, it was clear to me that this work was about exploring different and unusual sound colors to paint an unusual and fantastic world. perhaps because i didn’t have as firm of a grasp on finding these sounds as i do now, i felt that i could justify sacrificing considerations like a relatively clear pulse (and precision of intonation… ah, to be so naïve), if it gave me enough time to find interesting enough colors for each note or gesture. while i still think the sound itself is the main consideration here, what is lost when we take such liberties with such major components of a piece? what might be gained? can one build a technique that can bring forth a world of colors while still keeping the tension of this line of asymmetrical, never-landing rhythms written by pintscher? i want to believe that the steady pursuit of what can be better is always present in the life of anyone who makes art. we can always strive towards something more, and pieces like these can be immensely inspiring in the continuation of that journey. audio/video: @maxanisimov #cellosolo #contemporaryclassical #newmusic #cello #cellistsofinstagram
