What was your early music education like? Which teacher had the largest impact on you and why? All joking aside, the curriculum and structure that the Royal Conservatory of Music provides students can be a great way to explore Classical music. It’s not the only way, and there are many other systems like the ABRSM, but especially for students (or parents of students) who want a graded system that covers nearly all aspects of traditional classical music training, you can look no further! I remember when I was a kid and I said “I’ll NEVER teach the RCM system or become an examiner!” but my mom saw where some of my other strengths might lie. As a teacher, the RCM curriculum can be a wonderful journey for some students and for others, it can slow them down or hinder them. This is where my curiosity led me to explore alternatives to help students faster through the RCM curriculum or to create something new altogether to support their musical growth.
