Recording piano can be quite challenging due to its sheer physical size, dynamic range, and, of course, broad spectrum of timbral possibilities.
✅A few things to ask yourself as you begin: Do you want intimacy, size, attack, warmth, or realism? This will help you decide on microphone selection and placement.
1️⃣Closer mics = more detail and attack
Placing microphones closer to the strings will give you:
more articulation
more hammer definition
less room
This can work great in dense mixes.
2️⃣Moving the microphones farther from the instrument usually gives you:
more body
more natural balance
more room sound
This often feels more like hearing the actual piano in the room.
3️⃣Common approaches include:
spaced pair for width and size
XY for focus and mono compatibility
near-coincident for a natural stereo image
There is no single “right” method—just the one that fits the music.
4️⃣Lastly, watch the low end.
The bass side can build up quickly.
If the piano sounds muddy, do not immediately blame the mic—adjust placement first.
