From @sk__paints :::: Join us next Saturday, March 21 from 3-5 PM for the opening of Queer Ecologies Il in the gallery! Before the opening, from 2-3 PM we’ll be hosting zine-making in the library. Queer Ecologies Il brings together twenty Queer artists from the Midwest whose practices engage with their ecological counterparts. This second iteration, a collaboration between The Waiting Room in Kansas City and Purple Window Gallery in Chicago, builds upon an ongoing dialogue about the interdependent relationships between humans, the more-than-human world, and wildborn Queerness in our region. Queer Ecologies Il, curated by Bianca Brandolino, Lily Erb, Maven Kennedy, and SK Reed, embodies a deeply queer ethos: building the communities we seek beyond traditional structures and imagining more expansive, interconnected futures. - Swipe to see work from each of the contributing artists → 1: Bianca Brandolino (they/them) | Chicago, IL | @bianca.brandolino 2: Ell Brown (they/he) | Minneapolis, MN |@eli.m.brown 3: Maya Davis (she/they) | Hamtramck, MI| @mayabdavis 4: Lily Erb (them/them) | Kansas City, MO | @lilywelderb 5: Eve Gordon (she/they) | Brookfield, IL I @from.eves.studio 6: Naomi Hamlin-Navias (they/them) | Chicago, IL I @allfishgotoheaven 7: Kate Humphrey (she/her) | Chicago, IL I @kateweavesthings 8: Missy IsaMoore (she/her), part of Petals & Iron Collective | Kansas City, MO |@unrelaxedmissy @petalsandironkc 9: Linye Jiang (she/her)| Chicago, IL | @linye.j 10: Calder Kamin (she/her) | Independence, MO I @calderful 11: Katie Kaplan (she/her) | lowa City, IA | @pennysmasher 12: Maven Kennedy (they/them) | Chicago, IL I @mkennedystudios 13: Justin Korver (he/him) | Kansas City, MO I @justincaseyourewondering 14: Emily Mulvaney (she/her/they) | Minneapolis, MN | @emily_mulvaney 15: David Nasca (he/him) | Chicago, IL |@davnasca 16: Lucas Nguyen (they/them) | Overland Park, KS | @lucas_fiberarts 17: SK Reed (they/them) | Kansas City, KS | @sk_paints 18: Oona Taper (she/her) | Kansas City, MO I @oonataper 19: Exer Thurston (they/them) | Philadelphia, PA (from Columbus, OH) | @baybey.baybye 20: Kellen Wright (she/her) | Saint Louis, MO I @kellen_w

Interspecies Intimacy Survival Kit, 2018 . petri dish, wax, Schizophyllum commune specimen, lab equipment, emergency candle and match, leather harness, altered romance novel, hemp substrate, mycelium . This work imagines a near future time when the human birth rate has declined to a point where we’ve started experimenting with fungal-human reproduction potentialities. In the kit is a harness, a romance novel, a candle to put the user in the mood and sterilize your equipment. Pictured alongside the Survival Kit, on the right, is the Interspecies Reproductive Device. A prototype of a mycelial dildo - the world’s first living, fabricated phallus! For this piece, a phallus was constructed from a vacuum mold filled with sterile substrate and inoculated with Schizophyllum commune, a species of commonly-found fungi that contains over 28,000 sexes. This phallus can be utilized by all bodies. . . . #mold #fuckthepatriarchy #mycelium #queerecologies #transecology

Moving through what feels tangible and constructive amidst crisis. Letting myself entertain utopia. Getting educated on self sufficiency so as to serve my loved ones and community. Preparation mode. Grateful for this rage, for employment and examples of responsible land stewardship. 💕💕💕 @womensenvironmentalinstitute

Just received the catalogue from the @ppehlab 2022 Ecotopian Toolkit project! The Toolkit selects proposals from artists, designers, scientists, or anyone for a practical or conceptual tool for addressing a different local environmental problem each cycle and gives a small grant to begin work on a prototype 🔄 . The tools were on view @phillyseaport Museum in 2022. My tool, Another Mother, was the beginning of a larger scale project I’m still working on cataloguing all of the multi sex and reproductively diverse species of planet earth. 🌏

I’ve been having trouble making things lately, because who cares about conceptual art right now? But this Shaker stool-making class @fireweedwoodshop is bringing me back to life and into my hands again which feels good. <3

Happy 1 year anniversary to Power Bottom, a sculpture installation of mine still up @franconiamn 🙌✨🖤❤️‍🔥⛓️❤️‍🔥🖤✨🙌 This sculpture has become something my heart and mind fall back on when I’m feeling shitty about my work or my life. I feel proud of it and also a bit shocked/helpless by its own power and life beyond me, as it gets experienced by so many people of all ages and backgrounds. What will they think? Is this ok? Etc. I have witnessed so many queers walking the mound and enjoying themselves which of course makes me cry. I have also witnessed parents saying things like I can’t believe they let this be here. A lot of convincing that it is just a belt. I really enjoy and am fascinated by it all. There is a lot of letting go in public art. Thank you to @bardos_photography for the incredible footage Thank you @prudentaggression for being so sex positive and liberatory in your curation Thanks of course to @michael_legan @bruna_dalessandro @m_a_n_a_l_o_t @mycophile.e.art who were by my side as we carted heavy rubber mats across the prairie, stretched many hours worth of vinyl, welded rings in dark-ass 10 degree nights, melted huge ice spots with a blow drier to prep fabric, dragged heavy straps over ice and snow behind a pick up truck, Etc etc. ✨
