“We hear music every day in the background of our lives, but how often do we actually stop to listen?” That question from The Gaslamp Killer (@gaslampkiller ) became the spirit of our Five Records music exploration series—an invitation to slow down, open our ears, and reconnect with the records that truly shape us. Our final gathering wrapped a week ago, and it’s still resonating. Deep thanks to Only the Wild Ones (@only_the_wild_ones ) and Force of Nature (@forceofnature.la ) for hosting us in such a beautiful, intimate environment—and to the entire OTWO team for the care and attention that made each night feel special. Huge appreciation to Heather Tierney for believing in the series from the start to finish, helping make it possible, and to Leah Concialdi (@saxolutely ) and Jonathan Rudnick (@jafrika ) for spreading the word and building the momentum around it. Big shout out to our occasional surprise guests @cut_chemist and @rooseyaghmai for the extra layer of creativity and knowledge. A special thank you as well to @Discogs for recognizing the importance of the series and supporting it with exclusive stats and insights that added another layer to the conversations. And of course, endless thank yous and appreciation to GLK—the grand sorcerer—for the incredibly thoughtful deep dive and the many hours of development together with Eilon Paz (@eilonpaz ), that went into shaping something meaningful, educational, and honestly unforgettable. Most of all, thank you to everyone who came out, listened deeply, and shared those moments with us. That energy made the series what it was. More soon. Yesterday I spent the afternoon at Devon Turnbull’s (@devonojas ) HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream No. 3 at the Cooper Hewitt (@cooperhewitt ), with Laraaji (@laraaji_official ) as the guest operator—an artist I’ve admired for years and whose presence alone changes the temperature of a room. The atmosphere was beautiful: people genuinely tuned in, not just hearing but listening, and Laraaji moved through the set with warmth, humor, and that quiet sense of wonder he always carries. Sitting there, I kept thinking about inspiration and the mysterious ways it finds us, about what still moves creative people when so much around us feels rushed and distracted. Huge respect to Devon for his ongoing pursuit of sound, music, and aesthetics, and for bringing this kind of high-end listening out of private rooms and into public life, making it approachable and human instead of rarefied. And big appreciation to the Cooper Hewitt for hosting a program like this and giving it the space and care it deserves. It feels like part of a larger shift, a worldwide conversation about how we experience music and each other. In the end, it really is all connected.

Record Explorer | From the collection of Zoë ‘Luck Cat’ Baxter (@luckycatzoe ) Mickey and Sylvia - Love Is Strange Rhythm and blues duo Mickey Baker and Sylvia Robinson began their recording career in 1953. Their biggest hit, “Love Is Strange,” was released in 1957 on Groove Records. The duo split in the 1960s, and in the 1970s Sylvia went on to perform as a solo artist and became one of the founders of the rap label Sugar Hill Records. “In the eighties there was a bit of a fifties revival. You had films like Dirty Dancing, and this track—‘Love Is Strange’—was on the soundtrack. I wasn’t a big fan of the film, but I thought the soundtrack was amazing. I went and researched all the tracks and discovered that Mickey and Sylvia were really popular in Jamaica. Joya Landis even recorded a cover of their song ‘Mommy Out De Light’ for producer Duke Reid in 1968.” Full interview and mixtape on the Dust & Grooves website.  /lucky_cat_zoe/ . . . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinylcheck #records #recordplayer #turntable  #recordcollection #jamaica #sugarhillrecords
