About Dino “Edeth” Valdez:
Dino “Edeth” Valdez was born in Detroit Michigan in
1990. He grew up studying martial arts from his father and abstract art from his mother.
Today, his work strikes a balance between war and peace. Through a wide range of mediums, his work touches on themes of race, culture, futurism, and existentialism.
“My work is a study of conflict and resolution. I’m constantly in search of peace through turbulence and making work that represents both is important to me.
As a mixed kid of Black, Asian, and Native American descent, I’ve spent a lot of time researching the history of my people and I want those moments and wisdom to be felt through my paintings and sculptures. Though most of my work has been abstracted calligraphy and graffuturistic paintings, l’m rebuilding my visual language by using 3D and industrialized manufacturing processes. I hope to further represent my heritage and experience as a graffiti writer in this new body of work, that asks, “What does the future look like for Black, Brown and Indigenous people?” and
“If violence is a language, must I be fluent? If not, will I be spoken over?”
He is also the founder of the Heavenly Dogs Art Collective, KO Studio Gallery, former Exhibitions Manager at Red Bull Arts Detroit, and former Curatorial and Exhibitions Coordinator at MOCAD.
