Is it spring yet? 🌞 Excited to share what I’ve been working on at @cranbrookartmuseum including co-curating ‘Labyrinth/Laboratory: Selections from the Cranbrook Collection,’ a maze-like permanent exhibition spotlighting significant Cranbrook Academy of Art alumni, plus recent acquisitions, in new conversations across time and medium. Opening in 1932, the Academy of Art evolved from a series of arts and crafts based workshops to become one of most experimental art schools in the country, known for radical material experimentation and a self-directed pedagogy 🍎 Other highlights include organizing this year’s graduating MFA show, exemplary of Academy’s original mission… In the summer, I’m co-curating ‘Monumental Color: Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell,’ spotlighting our recently restored ‘Preface for Chris’ (1973) by Mitchell, for one, alongside expressive treasures from these quintessential abstract artists. And finally, I’m incredibly thrilled to curate the first solo museum exhibition ‘A Dreaming Hour’ of interdisciplinary Detroit-based artist @akeabrionne , featuring a new body of her digitally woven, immersive, and shimmering Afrosurreal textiles 🌙 More info soon!

The exhibition opens with a section exploring the interplay of text and image across different mediums, including photography, sculpture, and graphic design. Featuring @cranbrook_art artists, including alumnae Sheida Soleimani (@sheidajanam ) and Qualeasha Wood (@qualeasha ), these works reconsider photography’s role in the digital age. Visit us today from 11am to 8pm, it's FREE Thursday! Choose your path through the "Labyrinth" of these contemporary selections from the Cranbrook Collection. Learn more at the link in our bio, or RSVP for a special tour with the curators. @cranbrook_art | @cranbrookphoto

Labyrinth/Laboratory: Selections from the Cranbrook Collection is open to the public! Highlights from the maze include dreamy and distorted Carl Milles sculptures by painter @evanmazellan in conversation with Head of Ceramics Maija Grotell recalling the museum’s patinated front doors, a bright and disobedient woven basket/body by @studio_herron , and extruded @codynorman.studio ‘Trace’ chair aside the gestural, even serpentine marks on @fidelis_studio ‘After the North East’ (2023)🍀

Discover the story behind the design of "Labyrinth/Laboratory: Selections from the Cranbrook Collection" with Jeanne and Ralph Graham Curatorial Fellow, Katy Kim @cakesniffing . This exhibition highlights the contemporary work from alumni of our sister institution, @cranbrook_art . The Academy follows an unscripted approach to learning, asking students to create a path that suits their personal creative style. As such, "Labyrinth/Laboratory" fittingly resembles a labyrinth, with walls structured to invite visitors to choose their own path through the history of Cranbrook's contemporary art. Determine your own course! The exhibition will be on view alongside the Graduate Degree Exhibition, creating a conversation that bridges the Academy's history with its future. Celebrate the opening with us this Saturday from 6–9pm!

Join Katy Kim, Jeanne and Ralph Graham Curatorial Fellow, as she highlights "The Strawberry Tree" (2023), a headline piece in "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley." @thehaasbrothers invoked methods from multiple stages in their creative journey to bring this 3600-pound piece to life. From the bronze trunk to the 26-rule beading algorithm, the 14-foot tree is a masterclass in artistry and engineering. Want to hear more from Katy? Friday, February 20, is your LAST CHANCE to experience this exhibition on a Curatorial Fellow-Led Tour! RSVP at the link in our bio! Don't miss "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley" on view at Cranbrook Art Museum through Sunday, February 22. 👾

Follow Katy Kim, Jeanne and Ralph Graham Curatorial Fellow, as she discusses "She's So Ducky" (2018), a stunning piece in "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley." "She's So Ducky" is the featured piece on our publication and exhibition title wall, and for good reason! As "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley" is a mid-career retrospective, this punny bench represents a series of techniques, themes, and questions that @thehaasbrothers have been considering over their 15 years of making together. Want to hear more from Katy? Join her on a curatorial fellow-led tour of "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley" on February 6 and 20. RSVP (link in bio!) today! "Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley" is on view at Cranbrook Art Museum through February 22, 2026. 👾
