Open today 12โ€“5! ๐ŸฅŸ๐Ÿฅ–๐Ÿฆ โ€œSara Nishikawa builds stoneware ceramic objects shaped for, and around, our domestic rituals of snacking. Her ceramic objects are designed for specific foods including bubblegum, rice crackers, pocky (strawberry or chocolate), or inexplicably, shrimp cocktail. With this, Nishikawaโ€™s miniature objects seem as if designed for a particular user, sometimes herself, her nephew, or the loveliest imaginary guest. Handbuilt to a snack-sized scale, her objects have their ideal portions built into themโ€”almost neurotic allotments for perfect satisfaction and savoring.โ€ An excerpt from an essay written by Katy Kim @cakesniffing on the occasion of Sara Nishikawaโ€™s ๐‘บ๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†! ๐Ÿ“ท Clare Gatto

Opening March 26, 6โ€“8pm | Sara Nishikawa: ๐‘บ๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†! Organized on the occasion of @nceca Sara Nishikawa is a Detroit-based artist whose work focuses on domestic objects, the intersection between designed tools and food, and on the relationship objects have with narrative. What does it mean to live in a world that not only has melon ballers, but also ice cube trays designed to make ice the perfect size for a specific water bottle? Nishikawa earned her MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art, her MA in ceramics from California State University Northridge, and her BA in psychology at Loyola Marymount University. Recent exhibitions include Spaysky Fine Art Gallery LLC (Chicago, IL; 2022), Greenwich House Pottery (New York, NY; 2021), and Korean International Ceramic Biennale (Gyeonggi, South Korea; 2019). ๐Ÿ“ท Image credit: Clare Gatto

Join us on Thursday, March 26, 6โ€“8pm at 2900 E. Grand Blvd to celebrate the opening of Sara Nishikawaโ€™s ๐‘บ๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†! Organized on the occasion of @nceca ๐Ÿฅจ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸฅŸ๐Ÿ™ In ๐‘บ๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†! Nishikawaโ€™s ceramic sculptures emerge from memories that hover just beyond reach. Raised in Honolulu, she grew up in a family where love was expressed through food; sashimi carefully sliced, stuffed cabbage simmering, Rice Krispies treats waiting for her return home. These gestures of care linger in her work, where recollections of shared snacks, birthday tempura, and small exchanges across distance become points of departure. Formed through coils, slabs, and improvisational gestures, her vessels move fluidly between use and metaphor. Many operate as quirky character studies in the eating habits of those she holds dear: hyper-attuned, intricately functional objects imagined for singular users. In their subtle distortions and playful specificity, they reflect the minor gestures that make each of us distinct, and the quiet interpersonal rituals through which intimacy and belonging are built.

The first wave of photos from the weekend just landed, and Iโ€™m honestly in awe of what we created together in just a few days. Deep gratitude to everyone who stopped by, and to the artists and install crew who poured so much love into bringing this show to life. True to the spirit of Imbolc, working on this show has been a much needed spark of light at the height of a dark and relentless winter. So much to be grateful for. Artist List: @m4p4s @dshrp @nvmoody @elifcadoux @mayabdavis @drwngdrwng @sam_seurynck @weathercitizen @c44277788833999 Also, big love to our incredible install team @moody__gal & @catalog.raisonne and again to our hosts @vanderdetroit for the hospitality. Marรญa Cecilia Ferrer: ๐ˆ ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ก / ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐Ÿรญ๐จ ๐ž๐ง ๐ฅ๐š ๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐š opens Thursday, September 18 from 6โ€“10pm. All are welcome! Visual artist and designer Marรญa Cecilia Ferrer (b. San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives and works in Detroit, MI) works with clay, drawing, and acts of listening to transform discarded remnants of the everyday into sculptural forms that move between the earthly and the otherworldly. Rooted in memory and ecology and guided by an intuitive process, Ferrerโ€™s @maricecilia practice weaves together Caribbean mythologies, feminine archetypes, and family histories, with weather patterns and internet memes to conjure a living lore in which each work becomes at once sculpture, vessel, and spirit. Ferrer earned her BFA in Ceramics from Pratt Institute (2015) and MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art (2024). In 2020, she founded Ma Cerรกmica, a project dedicated to both utilitarian and sculptural ceramic work. ๐Ÿ“ท @daniel.ribar
