Four years ago, we transformed the schoolyard for Oakland Academy of Knowledge’s older students as one of our very first builds! Last Friday, we returned to do the same for the school’s youngest students. TK–2nd graders at OAK now have a schoolyard of their own with kid-designed play structures, a multi-sport court, new soccer goals, nature exploration areas, a Little Town Library, mindfulness pillars created by Oakland high school students, and 10 shade umbrellas over the play structures — the most we’ve ever installed! Build number 24 in partnership with @kaboom and @ousdnews , and the first of five planned for 2026 — because safe, beautiful places to play shouldn’t be an exception, they should be a given. When coaches get better, kids get better. That’s the idea behind the work @loyaltomysoil_org is doing in Oakland — and we got to see it in action firsthand. Founded by former MLB pitcher Tyson Ross, Loyal To My Soil runs free baseball and softball programming rooted in fundamentals, mentorship, and community on and off the field. At their recent clinic, middle school coaches from across Oakland spent the morning sharpening their craft — then stepped onto the field to put those skills to work with a group of young ballplayers. Eat. Learn. Play. is proud to support Loyal To My Soil’s work expanding access to quality coaching and youth baseball and softball for kids across Oakland.

To wrap up National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who have built something beautiful for Oakland’s kids. Together, our volunteers have assembled 67 slides, installed 72 basketball hoops and 30 soccer goals, painted ground games and murals at more than 20 schools, planted over 1,700 plants and trees, constructed more than 250 wood benches and planter boxes, and so much more! The result: 24 OUSD schools with revitalized schoolyards — places where kids can run, explore, create, and belong. None of this happens without the community, corporate, and school volunteers who give their time.
