Life Imitates Art brings together a diverse group of artists engaging with the shifting boundary between representation and reality. Participating artists reflect on how the images, symbols, and motifs that circulate through culture come to define our experience of the world. The exhibition considers appropriation not only as an artistic gesture, but as a broader cultural condition where meaning is continually borrowed, reframed, and reasserted.
Thomas’s curatorial approach emphasizes the fluid movement of images between personal, political, and collective spheres. Rather than presenting a singular thesis, the exhibition highlights the multiple ways that representation shapes, and is shaped by, everyday life. The artists assembled here propose that influence, authorship, and interpretation unfold in shared space, where art and reality are mutually informing. ______

Anthony Gallery is pleased to announce “DADS,” a collaborative exhibition by Wes Lang and Eddie Martinez nearly two decades in the making. Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, November 20, from 5–8 PM.
Having first shown together in Stockholm in 2005 at Loyal Gallery, and later that year in Chicago at Bucket Rider Gallery for “Thank You for the Days,” Lang and Martinez revisit that formative moment twenty years later. “DADS” reflects on the parallel paths they have traveled since—years marked by friendship, fatherhood, and a shared devotion to the immediacy of making. Though their practices have evolved along distinct visual and conceptual lines, both remain deeply rooted in gesture, intuition, and personal mythology.
Lang’s drawings channel the iconography of post-pop Americana through a Daoist lens, where impermanence, renewal, and self-realization guide his imagery. Figures such as skulls, reapers, horses, and Indigenous chiefs recur as emblems of freedom and transformation.
For Martinez, drawing is a daily, spontaneous process and a vital component of his studio life. His works on paper pulse with raw, expressive energy—layered with recurring figurative elements and a vocabulary of abstract forms that emerge, dissolve, and reappear through accumulation and revision.
Together, Lang and Martinez reveal a shared ethos rooted in the physical act of making. “DADS” reflects on the bonds that shape artistic practice over time—on friendship as continuity, and on drawing as an act that captures the fleeting rhythms of life itself.
“DADS” will be on view for the public at Anthony Gallery at 1360 W. Lake Street from November 20th, 2025 to January 10th, 2026.

Anthony Gallery debuts its new European space in Amsterdam with “Proost!,” a solo exhibition of new work by Tony Lewis. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 22nd from 6–8pm CET.
The show marks both the gallery’s Netherlands launch and Lewis’s first solo presentation in the city.
Rooted in the artist’s experimental project Lewis Bag—a functioning cocktail lounge within his studio—“Proost!” transforms cocktail menu drawings into studies of communication, atmosphere, and exchange. Translating the fleeting energy of conversation into visual form, the works explore how language, like a cocktail, can reveal and conceal in equal measure.
