Coming to Winter Park, Colorado! The redevelopment of Hideaway Park will see a new destination playground come to the historic ski town. Working directly with the Town, Earthscape’s initial schematic designs took inspiration from local landmarks: the historic Moffat Tunnel, the Winter Park Express locomotive, and the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The final result is a custom “mountain” structure that blends rational geometry with organic forms to create a stunning, three-dimensional play experience that serves as the centerpiece of the Town’s main revitalized park. Opening in June and more photos to come! Client: @townofwinterpark Collab: @kimleyhorn @dhmdesign @starplaygrounds

From transit-adjacent lot to neighborhood heartbeat. 📍 Gateway Crossing Park in Santa Clara, CA serves as a high-utilization anchor for a dense, mixed-use community. Designed by @petersen_studio , the park utilizes a sophisticated natural materiality to ground the urban site. Three key design moves: Organic Geometry: Intersecting circular towers and a matching pavilion create a cohesive, non-linear flow that breaks up the surrounding urban grid. Sculpted Topography: Custom-designed berms that meet the cylindrical playground towers add interesting verticality, creating opportunities for embankment sliding and integrated climbing. The Lantern Effect: By night, the timber towers transform into glowing beacons. This “lantern” aesthetic extends the site’s usability into the evening and establishes a distinct visual landmark for the neighborhood. By blending robust timber forms with artful cladding and thoughtful landforms, the project provides a tactile, adventurous destination that feels both architectural and inviting. Riverside Adventure Playround includes the first ever Forest Tower Trio by Earthscape. It is situated in one of Indianapolis’s most important parks and opened in 2025 as a part of massive investments in Indy’s park system. The Forest Tower Trio is the trifecta of Forest Tower play. When children reach the tallest space inside the tallest tower, they will be a full 20 feet in the air! The beauty of the Forest Trio is that it engages children of different ages, abilities and risk-tolerance levels. The most adventurous will love the thrill of getting through the challenging flexform sling seats inside the tall tower. At the same time, young children can engage in the Junior Forest Tower and stay closer to the ground. Adults or teens may choose to just hang out in the big triangular sling seats at ground level. The three Forest Towers are interconnected via flexform or rope bridges suspended from stainless steel rails. Built on a hillside in Columbia’s Finlay Park, the Cola Summit Playscape is a destination playground that blends architecture and play into an immersive play experience. The playground is anchored by a stunning three-level custom tower. Whether entering via an accessible wooden bridge built into the tower’s second level, racing down hillside slides, or weaving through a notched post forest built into the hills’ slope, there are numerous ways to explore, each with different challenge levels. The treehouse-style tower is packed with play value, offering rope and net play, accessible climbing routes, and a top level with a 360-degree view of the entire park. Inspired by woven branches, nests, and wind-swept grass, the tower’s sparse cladding creates a layered aesthetic enhanced by green accents that visually connect the playground to the surrounding park. The tower has three levels and spans a 22-foot grade change, inviting exploration from every direction. Two major slides — 16.5 feet and 23 feet tall — run parallel and exit side-by-side, encouraging friendly races. An accessible route ensures children of all abilities can access the 16.5-foot slide, while the largest slide is accessible via the playground’s 28-foot wooden bridge. Coventry PEACE Park is a vibrant, inclusive public space in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, that celebrates local identity. The park’s centerpiece is a striking cardinal climbing structure, modeled after the Ohio state bird, which offers an adventurous and artistic play experience for older children. To ensure a cohesive and welcoming environment for all ages, the junior play area features a matching mini red bird, providing younger visitors with a safe, scaled-down space to explore. Together, these unique structures serve as whimsical landmarks that embody the park’s mission of community-driven design and creative play. We appreciate all that we learn from our collaborators and clients. At this project in Denver, we worked with @shopworks_architecture , @flowdesigncollaborative and @starplaygrounds for @voacolorado . The courtyard playground at the Theodora Family Hotel is a vital space for families exiting homelessness, designed around the theme of metamorphosis (symbolized by abstract butterfly sculptures) to signify hope and renewal. Every element adheres to trauma-informed design principles to foster security and well-being. This includes: *Open sightlines for easy supervision and a feeling of security. *Graduated challenges and familiar components to build confidence without overwhelming children. *A calming color palette and hopeful theme to promote emotional restoration. The installation faced logistical challenges as the play area is situated above an underground parking garage. The sculptures had to be craned in over the five-story building. Securing the structures to the shallow slabs required innovative engineering and precise coordination. The result is a restorative, multigenerational hub that overcomes site constraints to support a community’s journey toward long-term stability. The children’s joy makes a heart flutter 💕🦋 📸 by @mattstaver

Snowflakes are nature’s confetti, right?! There’s a unique kind of magic that happens when wood play structures meet a fresh layer of snow. It’s a chance for kids to see their favorite spaces in a whole new light as a frosted wonderland. Snow doesn’t need to stop the fun; it just adds a new layer of adventure, and the best way to stay warm is to keep moving! Dress for the weather, pack some hot chocolate, and we’ll see you at the park! Images are from a variety of Earthscape playgrounds in Alberta, Ontario and Maryland, covered in snow AND kids! The Reaching Raccoon is a sculptural playground feature located in The Uplands, a part of the 40-hectare Biidaasige Park on Toronto’s waterfront. Standing upright and holding on to a cattail, this masked-bandit sculpture reaches toward leaves and dragonflies, creating a compelling vertical play experience that incorporates accessible features, ropes, and logs. Choosing a raccoon as a playable structure is a delightful wink to a shared urban experience. The city’s unofficial mascot—also known as a “trash panda”—invites kids to climb, explore, and play with a creature Torontonians love to complain about but secretly adore. Biidaasige means “sunlight shining toward us” in Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwemowin. The park is situated on the new island of Ookwemin Minising, meaning “the place of the black cherry trees,” which was created as part of the Port Lands Flood Protection project. The full park, including the playground, was designed by @mvva.inc in collaboration with local Indigenous partners, aiming to connect people with nature, celebrate waterways, and serve as a symbol of reconciliation and environmental stewardship.
