Bassial Pressure — Dushume
Bassial Pressure transforms architectural space into a living, resonant instrument. Drawing on spatial audio and sound system culture, the work places deep bass at the centre – not as background, but as a force that shapes structure, space, and sensation.
Low-frequency vibrations move through the materials of the building and the bodies within it, forming a dynamic field that audiences do not simply hear but physically inhabit. Within this environment, higher-frequency sounds are projected and set in motion, tracing shifting trajectories through the air. The result is an evolving interplay between grounded weight and spatial movement: bass anchors the space, while other sounds circulate and transform.
Informed by dub and diasporic bass cultures, the work invites a fully embodied mode of listening – one that emphasises noise, vibration, immersion, and collective experience over fixed sonic images or precise localisation.
Here, sound operates as both an architectural and social force, reshaping how space is perceived and shared. The audience is not positioned in front of the work, but within it: immersed in a field of pressure, resonance, and moving sound.
Special thanks to event lead and curator @emma_margetson and for capturing this Video, and to the sound man Spatial Audio technician @elfrizzell for all his help keeping the air pressure moving ;-)

🔥 Sound system culture from rural India lands in Brixton! 🔊
Filmmaker @ranaghose discovered this incredible phenomenon about five years ago - rural communities in Bengal building their very own sound system movement completely from scratch, totally independent of Jamaican or Western influences.
His new film 'Bass Boss' follows the journey of its key protagonist and is being showcased tomorrow night at the @bureau_of_silly_ideas ideas in Brixton! Think towering speaker stacks and homemade equipment to stage large-scale bass battles. There's also music artists @dushume and @dhangsha_music . Come on down, what else you gonna be doing on a Sunday night? ;)

BASS BOSS
Rana Ghose investigates Dek Bass, a sound system style unique to West Bengal and sets out to meet its elusive leading light DJ Khobir. Overwhelming, aggressive, and prone to virulent fandom in his region, this form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to Jamaican sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khobir.
कोई है / Koi Hain?! / Is anybody there?!
Nishant Shukla follows the intimate, performative rituals of a man offering tears to a river – a gesture of surrender and transcendence, a universal yearning to be seen by something beyond oneself. Referencing the pursuit of ‘Moksha’ – liberation from the cycle of rebirth – Koi Hain?! embodies our shared search for the unattainable.
Dushume
Amit Dinesh Patel is an experimental noise and sound artist. His work focuses on performing and improvising with purpose built do-it-yourself instruments, and recording these instruments incorporating looping, re-mixing and re-editing techniques. He is a Senior Lecturer in Music and Sound and an active member of the Sound/Image Research Centre at the University of Greenwich, London.
DHANGSHA
DHANGSHA (Bengali for ‘destruction’) is the alias of sound artist and educator Aniruddha Das. He works at the interface of bass culture and experimental noise, creating turbulent scores where ‘alien’ motifs evolve over sparse but heavy beats and distorted bass. Known for his visceral live sets, Aniruddha was recently appointed to teach in the Department of Electronic & Produced Music at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
This film is presented in collaboration with Jamm Pro.
LUFF 2025 // MUSIC SALLE DES FÊTES
Dushume | Mercredi 15 - 01:45 - Salles des fêtes
~
