In the mid-2000s, photographer Drew Jarrett was invited to document a revolutionary project aimed at
rehabilitating juvenile offenders. Instead of dumping them into the conventional correctional system, Penikese
Island School offered something different: a focus on accountability and responsibility. Students and staff lived
together on a windswept 75-acre island off the coast of Massachusetts. They connected with nature: chopping
wood, catching and cooking lobsters, swimming in the summer, and studying daily to improve their future
prospects in a therapeutic, family-style setting. Over several trips (the boat only went to the island once a week),
Jarrett forged relationships lasting years with staff and students, and was given a unique opportunity to capture
this optimistic, holistic take on improving the world. #pages #book
