O’A x @disc.global invites you to the exhibition at B–L Schaufenster, presenting O’A’s current work in collaboration with DISC. On this occasion, we will also share insights from our joint publication project HEATSHIELD. O’A is a collaborative identity in constant alteration. Operating at the intersection of spatial experimentation and systemic inquiry, it explores how architecture responds to shifting ecological and technological conditions. Its work unfolds through the development of experimental prototypes, supported by exploratory methods, analytical investigations, and in-depth study. At the core of its research lies an examination of comfort at the intersection of architecture, technology, and art. Through this lens, O’A seeks to reveal the hidden and parallel realities that shape our time. The practice moves fluidly between theory and practice—working both independently and in collaboration. Together with DISC, O’A is currently developing the publication HEATSHIELD. This collaboration brings together research, reflection, and design practice, offering a multifaceted contribution to the role of architecture in addressing thermal and ecological challenges. DISC Issue 3.0 “Enchantment” launch party @floatinguniversity in Berlin during summer 2024

Sylvia Lavin in Log 29 writes that “The urgent problems of today, from ecological disaster to the disruptions of war, take time to confront in architectural terms and it is unseemly and most often counterproductive when architecture jumps in too fast.” Said 10 years ago, or so, it appears as if we are still currently learning to swim. The next lesson might be a relearning of Preston Scott Cohen’s “Predicaments and Surrogates” in Contested Symmetries, with the proposition that “buildings fall prey to predicaments when architects, in attempting to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and to conceal all that must be done in order to do so, resort to the use of strange and exceptional forms.” While the motivations for Scott Cohen were not explicitly to find formal solutions for what we are calling a poly-crisis, the ethos of form follows forces is a compelling one.

LA launch party for issue 2.0 “Intimacy” QUIET 🔇🔇🔇 Party design by @office.party for @disc.journal at @materialsandapplications “The quiet launch event, hosted at the Materials & Applications Storefront in Los Angeles, converts the noise of the gathering’s Sunset Boulevard venue into the polite silence of a dinner party through the installation of a horizontal, 4-by-8 ft acoustically-engineered table. Sound-absorbing panels on the surface of the dinner table and the surrounding walls deadden ambient noise, bringing the conversation of guests, the sounds of eating, and percussion of utensils to the fore. The remnants of the launch party are left in place for display in the M&A Storefront, leaving traces of the evening’s activities.”
