Deva Schubert

Deva Schubert is a Berlin-based choreographer and dancer exploring voice through dance and digital media. Her work has been presented internationally at Haus der Kunst Munich, Kunsthalle Zürich, and Sophiensäle Berlin. In 2024, she received the ImPulsTanz Young Choreographers’ Award for Glitch Choir, and in 2025 she presented her first solo exhibition, Silent Spills, at Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna. Chihiro Araki is a multidisciplinary artist trained at The Tokyo Ballet School and Rambert School in London. She has performed with Carte Blanche / The Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance, Johannes Wieland Company, and artists such as Meg Stuart, Helena Waldmann, Sergiu Matis, Jule Flierl, and Pan Daijing. In Glitch Choir, Schubert translates moments of digital disturbance into analogue space through voice and body, recomposing forms of lament. Public mourning was historically performed by so-called “Klageweiber” — women commissioned to express the grief of others while carving out a rare public presence. Drawing on this tradition, the performance unfolds as an intimate space of multiresonance, passing from mouth to mouth. Within this temporary community, can grief become a collective glitch? What kind of choir emerges from dissonant frequencies? At Slippery Melody, the piece is presented in a new format, bringing Chihiro Araki and a choir together in a shared vocal constellation. It creates a rupture in the perception of reality. Can grief also be understood as a glitch in that sense? The performance Glitch Choir translates the moment of digital disturbance into the analog space through voice and body in order to recompose a lament. Historically, public mourning practices were long carried out by so-called “Klageweiber.” These women were commissioned to give emotional expression to the grief of others for the deceased. At the same time, the act of lamentation became a vehicle through which their voices could be heard, that otherwise had little presence in the public sphere. For the Schinkel Pavilion, Deva Schubert develops vocal variations of the performance adapted to the 360-degree space with a new choir, based solely on live voices. Thank you everyone who joined us for the performance program of Ora et Lege III ’Saïat Nova - New Hour’ curated by Elene Abashidze in the frames of Prague Art Week. In their artistic collaboration ‘Glitch Choir’, Deva Schubert and Chihiro Araki transfer the digital concept of the glitch into the analogue realm of the human voice and body. The performers aim to generate a space of intimate multi-resonance that blurs the line between the individual and the collective. Focusing on the deconstruction and recomposition of an Italian lamento—musical genre of mourning, ‘Glitch Choir’, as a feminist practice, seeks a polyphonic expression that finds strength in failure and connection in cacophony.
