Today is our last day of class with Professor Deval Patrick, the former Governor of Massachusetts. He’s truly inspirational to many people in the class. His stories and insights and experiences of his political career were eye opening to me and provoked me in digging further into the inner me about why I would be running for office.
What is your why? The most asked question and also comment in class, it’s ingrained in our minds now. Governor was so selfless in sharing his personal ups and downs in politics, as well as the challenges in reality he dealt with inside and outside politics, and the fact that he invited so many experienced politicians and people inside politics, from both sides of the parties, to come speak to us, ALL of these in one semester is just mind blowing.
I’m now feeling a piece of me is missing because my Harvard Kennedy journey is coming to an end (tomorrow). I will always be thinking of my classes and the amazing people I’ve met. This is truly an honorable and special journey, and I’m very grateful for my time here.

Last night I joined Hamza, Muhra, Natasha, Okechi, Daniel, and Yasmeen in telling our stories for the @HarvardKennedySchool ’s Center for Public Leadership Fellowship TED-Style talks.
We heard stories about democratizing health advocacy, mass incarceration, biological risks, and leading with your heart. I spoke about the power of community, and reflected on my experiences in growing up in South Texas. “Community” is not a collection of people but the bonds between them; it is a relationship where ideas, values, time, effort, love and pain is shared.
Deval Patrick is a civil rights lawyer and advocate, a business executive and entrepreneur, and the former Governor of Massachusetts. He has a breadth of experience that gives him an unusual range of insight into some of the most pressing issues facing our society today. In his TEDxBerkshires talk on July 24th, he will share some deeply personal thoughts about where we are and where we ought to be going. Day 3 of Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy. Today, the speakers discussed the role of disinformation in political violence and in terrorist groups. They also spoke about regulations and transparency measures for social media platforms, as well as reimagining the way social media is used altogether. My dad was diagnosed with type 2 and my mom is pre-diabetic, so this hits close to home.
1 in 5 Americans who have diabetes don’t know. But it’s even higher for Asian Americans.
1 in 3 aren’t aware that they’re suffering from diabetes.
It was an honor to be asked to speak and advocate for my community at the Taste for Ginger event to support the Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
About the Asian American Diabetes Initiative:
In response to the rising rates of diabetes in the Asian American population and the lack of culturally relevant research, clinical care, and education, Joslin Research Director George L. King, MD, and supporters of Joslin Diabetes Center established the Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) in 2000.
Goals of the AADI
Study diabetes in the Asian American population and disseminate Joslin’s research findings to healthcare providers and Asian American communities.
Provide diabetes education through innovative and culturally appropriate materials and outreach programs
Design and implement clinical treatment programs for Asian Americans
Collaborate with local, national and international organizations to raise diabetes awareness
Incorporate diverse community voices to promote health equity
For 17 years, A Taste of Ginger has served as a major diabetes education event and critical fundraiser for Joslin's Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) raising over $2.6 million.
